1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
The impacts on transportation sector are quite major due to rapid growth of urbanization, especially because of urban vehicular growth. Effects of urbanization are felt significantly in terms
of traffic congestions, delays, road safety, pollution and transport efficiency.
Urban Transport has been the worst sufferer of this fast pace of urbanisation because the priorities of shelter, water, sewerage and power have been over riding and have occupied greater attention of governments. The phenomenal growth of population and economic activities have
brought to the fore the magnitude and intensity of urban transport problems. While the demand
for urban transport has been growing rapidly, the supply of transport infrastructure has not kept
pace. Consequently the mobility levels in cities have been falling.
Traffic and transportation problems in cities of various sizes vary in their type and dimensions.
Problems in small and medium sized cities are not so pronounced as in the large cities. While
traffic problems need to be looked into more closely in all its dimensions in large cities, small
and medium cities also deserve utmost attention, as these would become the large cities tomorrow. Traffic and travel characteristics are changing rapidly in the Indian cities due to a variety of
reasons. An analysis of traffic and transportation scenario is necessary to achieve an understanding of the issues in urban transportation.
Road traffic has been growing at a very rapid rate in Indian cities during the past three decades.
The number of motor vehicles has been growing at a rate of around 10 per cent per annum. The
production of motor vehicles has also been growing at a rapid rate. As a result of the steep
growth of motor vehicle population, the traffic on the roads has been increasing, both in terms of
volume and intensity.
The investments on roads have not kept pace with the growth of traffic, with the result there is
severe congestion on the roads. Speeds are low and vehicle operating costs are high with high
amount of traffic accidents. As the road transportation sector is the driving force of any countrys
economic development, it is most essential to look after the Traffic Engineering measures which
serve as a valuable tool to understand the problems and evolve suitable measures to overcome the
deficiencies.
As the transportation planning is a continuous process based primarily on the quality of traffic
plying on the roads, it is necessary to understand traffic characteristics and their behavior under
varied geometrical compositional and control conditions. The present study aims to carry out
traffic characterization and assessment of Level of service on arterial, sub arterial, collector and
Local roads of Coimbatore city.
1.2 OBJECTIVES
The study has been carried out with keeping following objectives in focus:

shows a gradual decline. The maximum temperature ranges from 36 C to 41 C and the minimum

temperature varies from 14 C to 31 C. The mean daily temperature during summer (May) varies
o
from 33 C to 40 C and the mean daily temperature during winter varies from 15 C to 36 C. This district receives rain both in south west and north east monsoon. The north east monsoon contributes
more especially during October and November. The average annual rainfall of this district is 647.2
mm from four distinct seasons' viz., winter, hot weather period, south-west monsoon and north-east
monsoon.
2.1.4 Major transport linkage to Coimbatore
Air transport:
The city is served by the Coimbatore International Airport at Peelamedu 11 km (6.8 mi) from the city
and an air-force base at Sulur 23 km (14 mi). The Coimbatore International Airport caters to domestic flights to major Indian cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkatta
and Mumbai and international flights to Sharjah and Singapore. Its runway is 9,760 feet (2,970 m) in
length and is capable of handling wide-bodied and fat-bellied aircraft used for international flights.
Rail transport:
Train service in Coimbatore started in 1852, upon construction of the Podanur - Madras line connecting Kerala and the west coast with the rest of India. Broad gauge trains connect Coimbatore to all
parts of India and Tamil Nadu. Meter gauge line existed between Podanur and Dindigul got closed
on May 2009 and is under gauge conversion. The Coimbatore Junction is well connected to major
Indian cities like Chennai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Mumbai, Howrah, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Rajkot, Indore, Ahmedabad, Jammu, Kanpur and Patna. It is second highest revenue yielding
station in the Southern Railway division of Indian Railways.
Road transport:
There are seven major arterial roads in the city: Avinashi road, Trichy road, Satyamangalam road,
Mettupalayam road, Pallakad road, Pollachi and Marudhamalai road. There are three National Highways passing through the city: NH-47, NH-67 and NH 209.Apart from state and National Highways,
the city corporation maintains a 635.32 km long road network. has several major bus stands. The
town buses (intra-city) operate from the Town Bus Stand in Gandhipuram to other bus stations
across the city. Inter-city buses that connect Coimbatore operate from five different bus stands:
Gandhipuram Bus Stand (for buses going to East and North East to Erode, Gobichettipalayam, Tirupur, Karur, Salem, Sathyamangalam and surrounding areas), Singanallur Bus Stand (for buses to
Madurai, Trichy and the towns around them), Thiruvalluvar or SETC Bus Stand at Gandhipuram (for
Express buses to Other states and also within Tamil Nadu), Ukkadam Bus Stand (for buses to Palak-

2.2.1Residential Use :
The pattern of residential development in Coimbatore follows the pattern common to most
Towns in Tamilnadu viz., high densities in the older parts of the town and low densities in the newly
planned residential developments. The newly developed residential areas such as Ramnagar,
R.S.Puram, Tatabad, Race Course, and Sai baba colony are characterized by a regular street plan
well shaped plots and possess some extent of reservation for public use. Outside these areas, the development is mostly unplanned and haphazard Nearly 68.52% of the developed area of city forms the
residential use.
2.2.2 Commercial Use :
The Commercial use is concentrated, in the heart of the oldest part of the city. Wholesale and
retail business and warehousing activities are carried out here. At present 5 daily markets are maintained by the municipal corporation The main commercial area in the older parts at the town are located at Oppanakkara Street, Rangai Gounder Street, Big Bazaar Street, and other adjacent streets.
The municipal daily market is also located in this area. Commercial usage mainly retail business are
found along Dewan Bahadur Road, Cross Cut Road, both sides of Avinashi road upto Race Course
Road, Jall Road, N.S.R.Road, Tudiyalur Shandy is the biggest shandy within the planning area and it
is also a important cattle market. There is a big weekly market in Singanallur, Commercial use occupies 5.68% of the total developed area of city area.
2.2.3 Industrial Use :
Coimbatore local planning area has attracted a number of large industries like textile mills,
textile machinery, cement, rubber, transport equipment, foundary engineering and a variety of engineering industries producing finished goods especially in the medium and small scale sector. Textile
mills are located within the present city limits. Three textile mills are located near the overbridge at
the heart of the city. The other textile mills and factories are mainly located along Trichy Road, and
Avinashi Road, Peelamedu, Singanallur and Upplipalayam are the major industrial areas. The engineering units light as well as heavy are located along the Mettupalayam Road, and also along the

2.2.5 Density :
The Population of residential developments within the city, is with a high density of population ranging from 300 to 625 persons per hectare in old part of the City such as Bazaar, N.H. Road,
and Sukravarpet areas. The Density of population in areas such as Race Course, R.S.Puram, Tatabad
per hectare. In the remaining areas of the city, the density range below 140 persons 1. P.N.Palayam
and Ramanathapuram ranges from 140 to 390, 2. In the remaining areas of the density ranges below
140 person per hectare. The higher ranges of population density is also formed near the fringes of the
city. The gross density of the population in Coimbatore City area is 105 persons per hectare. The net
residential density and overall residential density for the city is 185 persons per hectare and 66 persons per hectare respectively.
2.2.6 Roads and Traffic Management
The Corporation, State Highways & Rural Works, and the National Highways maintain roads
in the city. However, the highways passing through the city account for about 48 kms alone. Road
improvement works and planning in residential areas is the prerogative of the Corporation. 209. Existing Situation: The Corporation maintains a large road network of 635.52 kms. Of the total road

The road provides connectivity to Coimbatore airport also. A bypass has been constructed,
outside city (known as L&T bypass) between Avinashi road and Palghat road.
Avanashi road experiences considerable traffic congestion during peak hours since a number of Educational Institiutions and industries are located along the road. There will be a further spurt in the

2.3.2 Junctions :
Lakshmi Mills Junction is a four legged signalized intersection formed by Puliankulam
Road and PN Palayam Road with Avinashi Road. This junction connects Trichy road and Gandhipuram Bus Terminal. Most of the traffic takes diversion from Avinashi Road to other city areas. As per
the study conducted in 2005, the peak hour traffic at this junction is about 7600 PCUs.
Vilankurichi Junction is a four- legged staggered signalized junction formed by PSG Hospital Road and Vilankurichi Road with Avinashi Road. The junction experiences heavy movement of
traffic during peak hour due to location and land use pattern around the junction. Two wheelers, car
and auto are the prominent modes of transport for public at this junction. The peak hour traffic is
about 6200 PCUs.
Sowripalayam Junction is a four-legged signalized intersection formed by Thannirpanthal
road and Maskalipalayam road with Avinashi road. Since densely developed residential house, textile mills, shops and other commercial activities surround the intersection; the pedestrian and vehicular movements are more. The peak hour traffic observed at this junction is about 6800 PCUs.
Hopes College Junction is a three-legged signalized intersection of Avinashi main road and
Kamaraj road (Cotton Mills road). During peak hours police control the traffic this junction. It provides connectivity to Trichy road and places such as Singanallur and Masakalipalayam. There is no
proper ROW at this intersection in Avinashi road. Departmental stores, shops and Commercial activities surround this junction. Coimbatore Erode main railway line crosses the road about 50m from
the junction.
Uppilipalayam Junction is a four-legged signalized intersection formed by Head Quarters
roads and ADDIS Street with Avinashi road. One side of the Avinashi Road leads to Dr. Nanjappa
Road and this gives connectivity to DSP junction as well as to western part of Coimbatore city. Other
side of the Avinashi Road leads towards Lakshmi Mills. Head Quarters Road connects with State
Bank road where the railway station is located. The roads joining at this junction carry heavy traffic.

3. TRAFFIC STUDIES
3.1 SURVEYS CARRIED OUT
Traffic flow behavior changes from section to section due to change in land use pattern, type of
road namely Arterial, Collector and Local Street, vehicle compositions and share of each mode in
traffic composition, which affects the speed of vehicles.
To study this characteristics following surveys are proposed to be carry out on Arterial, collector
and Local Street,
a) Classified Volume count
b) Spot speed study
c) Travel time study
Classified volume count is carried out for 16 hours on each class of road by manually and from
this data spot speed and travel time study is carried out for selected 6 hours. These 6 hours is
consisting of lean periods, Pre-Peak period, two peak periods and two off-peak periods. Spot
speed study is carried out by short base manual method for 30m stretch. Travel time is evaluated
by moving car method. Video graphic survey is also carried out for those 6 hours. Survey formats
are attached in Annexure I to III.
3.2 PROJECT METHODOLOGY
To understand the variation in flow of the traffic in the city with size of city, it is decided to
carry out study in different urban cities with different range of population. We selected Trivandrum city from south part of India. Accordingly objectives & scopes are framed for our study.
Survey methodology with working plan is formed enlisting different surveys to be carried out,
classified in primary and secondary surveys. After completing all surveys and data compilation is
carried out and after analyzing the data interpretations are drawn out. Finally conclusions are
made out. Methodology of work is given in following Figure .

Various factors considered while selecting the study stretches are as below:
Study stretch should be at mid-block section of each category of the road.
Some appropriate representative sample stretches of each category of the road should be selected with the help of some past studies.
Land use pattern and Road side activities are also studied.
Geometry of the road of each class should be as per IRC guidelines.

Generally mixed traffic condition is observed on urban road so that it is necessary to express
the capacity of urban roads in terms of Passenger car unit (PCU) and each vehicle type is
converted into equivalent PCUs based on their relative interference. In urban situations, the
speed differentials amongst different vehicle classes is generally low, and as such the PCU
factors are predominantly a function of the physical dimensions of the various vehicles.
For this PCU value from code IRC 106, 1990, Guidelines for capacity of urban roads on
plane area is adopted. Following Table 12 shows the PCU values adopted in our study based
on vehicle composition values.

4.1 Arterial (Avinashi) Road :

It is carried out on Avinashi Road, one of the busiest and major corridors of the city. Survey stretch was near to Airport. Hourly traffic count towards FOB is shown in Table No.4.1 Detail survey data of classified volume count is given in Annexure I.1.

5. STUDY FINDINGS
5.1 VARIATION IN CLASSIFIED VOLUME COUNT
5.1.1 Arterial Road
On the basis of the 16 hour CVC, it is observed that traffic moving towards FOB direction is
more than traffic moving towards Airport direction. Traffic Flow is observed towards FOB
and Airport during Morning Peak is 1418 VPH and 1794 VPH respectively. During evening
peak the total traffic observed towards FOB is 2067 VPH and towards Airport is 1328 VPH.
The traffic flow observed during morning lean period towards FOB direction and Towards
Airport Direction are 207 and 358 VPH respectively.
5.1.2 Collector Street:
Behavior of traffic on Collector Street is changing but with variation throughout the day. On
Collector Street the traffic volume observed away from Arterial and towards Arterial road directions are 1007 and 910 VPH respectively. During evening peak the traffic flow observed
away from Arterial road and towards Arterial road directions are 1332 and 894 respectively.
During morning lean period it is observed away from Arterial and Towards Arterial road direction are 163 and 127 respectively.
5.1.3 Local Street:
Behavior of traffic on Local Street is changing but with variation throughout the day. On Local Street the traffic flow observed towards Collector street and away from Collector street
are respectively 662 and 651 VPH respectively. During evening peak it is observed that the
traffic flow towards Collector street direction and away from Collector street direction is 439
and 669 VPH respectively. During morning lean period it is observed towards Collector
Street and away from Collector Street is 50 VPH and 54 VPH respectively.
5.2 PEAK FACTOR AND DIRECTIONAL SPLIT OF VOLUME
Peak Factor is the ratio of peak hour flow to the total daily flow on a route.

On Thycaud Road, Trivandrum, design stream speed limit is obtained as 37.87 km/h which is
nearer to but higher side of the prescribed speed limit on it of 30 km/h. For each mode wise 85 th

6. CONCLUSION
GENERAL
The percentage of heterogeneity is almost similar on all the three roads under study. It has
been observed that due to proper planning of road hierarchy, the smooth flow of traffic was
observed on every road. All roads are in very good conditions due to regular maintenance of
the road. It is observed in all three roads that the share of personalized vehicles is dominating
and share of non-motorized vehicles is negligible. Public transportation system is good and
the condition of buses is aesthetically good also the fare is reasonably equal to other cities.
The overall observation of traffic composition, speed and capacity is discussed in following
section.
TRAFFIC COMPOSITION
On Arterial road, fast moving vehicles are 99% and slow moving vehicles (NMT) are only 1% to 2% of the total traffic. It can be observed that the public transport share is only
8%. Two wheelers are dominating contributing maximum share of 63% followed by cars
20% and auto rickshaw 3.5%.
On collector road similar pattern observed. Fast moving vehicles are 98% and slow moving vehicles are only 2% of the total traffic. It can be observed that the public transport
share is only 15%. Two wheelers are dominating contributing maximum share of 45%
followed by cars 32% and auto rickshaw 3%. Flow of two wheelers is varying during day
time on Collector Street while that of car and other vehicles is almost uniform.
The traffic flow in the direction away from arterial road is high compare to that of towards arterial road direction. This reflects the land use pattern of the regions which are
connected by the street.
On Local road, fast moving vehicles are 99% and slow moving vehicles are only 1% of
the total traffic. Two wheelers are dominating contributing maximum share of 70% followed by cars 22% and auto rickshaw 4%.
