Mexico gets into the recycling game

Mexicans drink a lot of soda. Only Americans drink more! That means that
Mexicans throw out an enormous number of PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
bottles every day of the year. PET can take up to 500 years to decompose.
Currently, Mexicans only recycle one percent of all the trash they produce.
But now that is all changing! In Toluca, for example, authorities are opening a
bottle-to-bottle plant this week. It is the biggest plant of its kind in the world.
The plant turns old soda bottles into pure PET to make new bottles for the
enormous Mexican soda market.
This is important for sanitation reasons. Most used PET bottles go to landfills
where they collect water when it rains. The water provides a breeding ground
for mosquitoes that carry diseases like malaria and dengue fever. So authorities
in Mexico are helping the planet, and they are protecting the Mexican people
from sickness at the same time
