LaurieEldridgeschapterexplainingEsmeraldasBoutiqueexpressesideasregardingthe
natureofstudentlearningandhowbesttoengagestudentsasactivelearnersthataresimilartothose
proposedbyHousen&YenawineintheirexplanationofVisualThinkingStrategies(VTS).Housen&
YenawinesuggestthatVTSallowsforstudentstobecomequestionaskersandreflectivethinkers,
whichhelpthemgrowcognitively(64).TheprinciplesforwhyVTSshouldbeusedarealsoemphasized
byEldridge,whonotesthatwhenlowSESstudentsareapartofacaringeducationalcommunity,they
canbegintofeelsafeenoughtotrusttheirteachersandbecomereadyforlearning(289).Eldridgealso
commentedonherdesireforteacherstomaintainaholisticviewofeachchildinaschool,andtoreflect
onwhattheyneedasindividualstooptimizetheirlearning(293).
TheseapproachestoeducationfeelsimilartotheneoVygotskianunderstandingof
developmentthatIhavebeenintroducedtointheChildDevelopmentdepartment,whichencourages
teacherstoallowchildrentonegotiatemeaningwitheachother,shareideastosolveproblems,andgain
experiencethinkingdeeplyabouttheirschoolwork.EldridgesinclusionofMaslowsPyramid(290)
alsoservesasareminderforteachersthatitcanbehelpfultomaintainaholisticviewoftheirstudents.If
astudentisnoteating,orisfacedwithadultproblems,itisunrealistictoexpectthemtobeableto
prioritizeschoolwork.Byrememberingthis,teacherscandeveloptrustingrelationshipswithstudents
thatallowthemtoprovidethesupportintheclassroomthateachstudentmayneedtobesuccessful.
