Title/Type of Lesson: Find Someone Who
Context of Lesson: This lesson is appropriate at this time because students
have spent the past six weeks reviewing various parts of Virginia history that
they learned throughout fourth grade. In their last social studies units, they
discussed some parts of the Jamestown settlement, as well as Virginia
regions and rivers. This will go deeper into their knowledge of early Virginia
settlements by discussing cash crops and slave labor most specifically.

This SOL addresses Virginia Studies SOL VS.4: The student will demonstrate
knowledge of life in the Virginia colony by:
(a) explaining the importance of agriculture and its influence on the
institution of slavery.
Assessment:
As a form of informal assessment, I will circulate during this activity to listen
to students explain their understanding to each other. I will also collect the
Find Someone Who sheet at the end of class in order to see if students
have a full understanding of the topic.
Materials Needed:
Find Someone Who worksheet
Procedure:
The first rotation of students (Mrs. Childress class) will come in at
1:30.
I will briefly talk to the students about what they talked about the
previous day (a brief review on cash crops, slavery, etc.).
I will explain the Find Someone Who activity to students, noting the
following:
o Everyone must complete his or her own worksheet.
o You may not answer a question on your own sheet.
o You may get one answer from a teacher (Mrs. Howerton or I).
o When someone gives you the answer to one of your squares, you
need to write it down and have them sign it.
Students will work cooperatively to complete the activity and will turn
it in at the end of class.
Time permitting, we will review the answers to the activity.
Students will dismiss and return to their homeroom teacher. The lesson
will be repeated with our homeroom.
Differentiation:
For students that are struggling with the activity, I will work with them more
closely to talk them through some of the questions as opposed to them
solely working with fellow students. If students should need enrichment, I will
provide them with some higher order thinking questions as they complete
the activity.
What Could Go Wrong:

It is possible that students will not be able to answer some of the questions
(though all of them should be review from last year). Though this may be
frustrating to some of the students, the activity is primarily so that we can
gauge how much they remember as a learner from fourth grade, which will
allow us to move on with further instruction based off of their performance.
