As the capital city, Madrid's traditional music has been influenced by the neighboring regions of Castilla-Leon and Castilla-La Mancha. However, many local musical traditions from Madrid's villages have disappeared as the city has modernized and its population and industries have grown. While flamenco music remains closely associated with southern Spain, Madrid is also known for the chotis dance tune and integrates folk music traditions from other parts of Spain and other countries performed in venues like Irish pubs and jazz clubs.

    IberianPeninsula.Thatmeansconvenientlylocatedifyoualsowanttotraveltoany
    otherregioninSpain,oreventoPortugal.Madridcity&itsoutskirtsisanAutonomous
    Communityinitself.ItissurroundedbythecommunitiesofCastillaLeon(North)and
    CastillaLaMancha(South).Therefore,thetraditionalmusicoftheMadridareais
    mainlyrelatedtothesetwoneighbouringregionstoo.
    However,thelocalmusicintheMadridregionhassufferedduringthelastdecades,adecayofits
    mostrootedtraditions.Thereareseveralrecordsofdifferenttypesoflocalsongs,dances,
    instruments,etcwhichwerepeculiarofMadridsvillages.Butasinanybigurbanarea,the
    industry,population,lifestyleshavecontinuouslyevolved,andmanylocaltraditionshavealmost
    totallyextinguished.

    MadridcityhasbeenopentointegratemusictraditionsfrommanyotherpartsofSpainorabroad.
    Example:ThekindoflocaldancetunethatisconsideredthemosttypicaloftheoldMadrid
    downtown,iscalledChotis,andisknownheresincethe19thcentury.Thenameispresumedto
    beanevolutionofthewordSchottische,whichwasakindofslowpolkaoriginalfromBohemia.
    Placesofinterestforafolkmusicfan,aremostlydispersedalongthestreetsofthatoldMadrid,and
    rangefromTablaosFlamencos(tavernswithflamencomusicshows)toIrishpubs,orrockand
    jazzclubs,whichdedicatecertainconcertstoSpanishandforeignfolkmusicbands.

    Thereisafrequentdifferentiationthatwemakeoverhere,betweenFlamencoandtheother
    Spanishtraditionsonfolkmusic.Tobetterexplainthisduality,Iliketocompareitwiththemusic
    ofNorthAmerica.Overthereyoufindtwo(maybethree)highlypopularstylesoftraditionalmusic,
    suchasCountryorBlues,mostlyoriginalfromWesternandSouthernstates.Andthenyoucanalso
    hearavarietyofmuchlesspopularmusictraditions,geographicallyspreadfromtheborderswith
    MexicouptoCanada(Cajun,Zydeco,BlueGrass,NorthAmericanfolksongs).
    InSpain,FlamencowouldbeourequivalenttoBluesorCountrymusicintheUSA.Itbelongs
    mainlytotheSouthernregionofAndalusia,itssurroundingCommunitiesandseveralSpanish
    cities.Andthenwealsohave,inamorelimitedlevelofpopularity,differenttraditionalmusicin
    eachandallpartsofSpain,includingtheislands(BalearicandCanary).
