Alexander von Humboldts New World

cclaimed author Andrea Wulf returns to The Frelinghuysen Arboretum on Sunday, May 15, at 3
p.m. as part of the Great Speaker Series to discuss her newest book, The Invention of Nature:
Alexander von Humboldts New World. Named by The New York Times as one of the 10 Best Books
of 2015, their stellar review noted that Wulf doesmuch to revive our appreciation of this ecological
visionary through her lively,impressivelyresearched accountof his travels and exploits,reminding us of the
lasting influence of his primary insight: thatthe Earth isa single, interconnected organism, one that can be
catastrophically damaged byour own destructiveactions.
Alexander Von Humboldt, Prussian born naturalist, explorer, and philosopher, created much of the
framework for how we understand the natural world today. An intrepid traveler, his adrenaline packed
explorations and their subsequent writings predicted climate change and laid out the groundwork for GPS
technology. Wulf connects Humboldtss work to Darwin, Muir, and Thoreau to name a few. Her careful
and thorough research makes excellent underpinnings for her dramatic presentation - filled with beautiful
imagery, intriguing detail, and riveting dialogue. A book signing and the chance to speak with Ms. Wulf
complete the afternoon. This program is eligible for 1.5 Rutgers Master Gardener CEUs. The cost is $30 per

Luck O the Farm: Farmhands and Houseservants
uring the 19th century, Irish flocked to the United States and embarked on a new life. The American landscape became a melting pot of diverse cultures that immigrated to this
country. Many Irish immigrants settled in the Morristown area! At Luck O the Farm, you can learn about the Irish immigrants who worked at Fosterfields. On Saturday, April 16,
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., share the experiences of the Irish who served as farmers and domestic workers by participating in hands-on activities at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm
in Morris Township.
Chat with the farmers wife, Mrs. Cahill, in the Creamery building, and help her
churn cream into butter. Stop at the Carriage House to assist Andrew Gibbons, the
coachman, with his chores, and talk to him about his job. Hop on board an open-air
wagon ride around the farm. Alongside the Irish farmhands, roll up your sleeves to
weigh eggs, prepare for spring planting in flats, and pump water. Follow the delicious
smells to the kitchen of the Farmhouse, and discover what traditional Irish foods are
being prepared on the wood-burning cook stove. Watch how an Aran sweater is knitted
in the parlor.
In contrast to the farmers home, visit the mansion, The Willows, where the
Foster family lived. Lend a hand with spring chores alongside the Irish servants. Help
with laundry, beating rugs, stacking wood, and polishing silver.
Take a break from household chores and enjoy the Irish music performed by
Linda Russell. Listen to stories of Irish folklore, and make a Irish craft to remember
your special day at Fosterfields. In the Transportation Exhibit, view the Rockaway
carriage that Coachman Andrew Gibbons drove. Be sure to try out all of the interactive
displays!
Special event admission fees are $8 per adult, $7 per senior (65+), $6 per
child age 4 - 16, and $4 per child age 2 and 3. FREE per child under age 2. Friends
members are half price with a current membership card.

Night Time Hiking

Adventures!
xploring the Morris County trails by flashlight or moonlight

unveils an entirely new world. Nocturnal animals, such as owls,
frogs, raccoons, and bats are starting their day as the sun sets,
while chipmunks, songbirds, and turtles are quieting down for their
night.
This is your chance to experience something unique and amazingly
wonderful. Led by naturalists, enjoy hands-on activities along the trails,
discover the adaptations of nocturnal animals, and listen for the wildlife
that is busy in the night. Perhaps you will spot a flying squirrel gliding
by, hear frogs calling, or glimpse an opossum peering down from a tree.
Mark your calendar for exploring the nighttime trails of the Great
Swamp Outdoor Education Center on Friday, April 8. Preregister for a
time slot between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. These easy-level walks are over
flat trails and boardwalks and last approximately 60 to 75 minutes. The
cost is $6 per person, age 5 and older.
Looking for more nocturnal adventure? Follow a guide along
the darkening trails to watch the sun set and the full moon rise while
looking and listening for the forests nocturnal inhabitants. If you are
an adult or teenager 16 and older, come to Pyramid Mountain Natural
Historic Area in Montville Township for a spring time Full Moon Hike.
On Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m., hike to view Aprils Sprouting
Grass Moon, as it was known by the Native Americans. Officially
welcome the beginning of summer viewing the full Strawberry Moon,
on Monday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. on the Summer Solstice Full Moon
Hike.
The cost for each Pyramid Mountain NHA hike is $5 per person
and preregistration is required.
Although our goal is to navigate by moonlight, flashlights are
welcome.

Butterfly
A CUT ABOVE:
Born to Be Shorn
here else can you witness the hand-shearing of sheep, up close and personal, as it was done in the
past? Bring the entire family to a truly unique and extraordinarily fun experience. At Born to Be
Shorn on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cooper Gristmill, Chester Township,
watch as an expert shearer trims the sheeps winter fleece to make the animal more comfortable for the
warmer months ahead. Without a doubt, were ready to make good use of their fleece, too!
Following the shearing, you can help with the various processes by washing the fleece, carding,
spinning, and weaving the yarn. Watch first-hand as fleece is dyed in a pot over an open fire. Have fun
making a special sheep craft, and try other fascinating fiber crafts to take home. Top off your day with a tour
of the 1826 water-powered Cooper Gristmill - the only fully water-powered gristmill in New Jersey that still
produces flour and meal.
Admission for Born to Be Shorn is $3 per adult, $2 per senior (65+), and $1 per child age 4 through 16.

Spring Spottings Challenge
This time of year is exciting as new animals and plants emerge almost every day.
The skunk cabbage is flowering in the wetlands, and the first migratory birds have
returned from the south. The chirping of frogs can be heard in the forest pools, and even the first butterfly
of the year has been spotted. The Great Swamp OEC and Pyramid Mountain NHA staff, have tracked the
appearance dates of spring wildlife for more than a decade and compare them from year to year.
You can join the fun of tracking the changes in the natural world during the program, Spring Spottings
Walks with the naturalists of the Morris County Park Commission. Choose from a multitude of guided
walk offerings scheduled from April through June at both sites. Tally your sightings on the FREE Spring
Spottings Checklist, adding to the list during each successive program. Discover the timing of the new
sightings, comparing them to prior years, and learn interesting facts about all the wildlife observed.

art, their metamorphosis is intriguing, and
their value as pollinators is often
overlooked. Celebrate the beauty and
importance of New Jerseys butterflies
and other pollinator friends at the annual
Butterfly Bonanza on Saturday, June 11,
from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Pyramid Mountain
Natural Historic Area in Montville Township.
The event is packed with excitement, entertainment, and
education for all ages. Enjoy a guided Bug Safari tour of the
butterfly garden with a naturalist who shares fascinating facts
about the amazing adaptations of the many critters that call
it home. Discover how to bring butterflies to your own yard
with native plants and seeds available for purchase, as well as
laminated guides of New Jerseys butterflies. Travel through
lifecycle stations to experience metamorphosis firsthand and
walk through the Hall of Arthropods to meet unusual live
insects and other invertebrates. Create butterfly origami, and
listen to live music and stories as you celebrate the life and
legacy of these beautiful and diverse animals.
The highlight of the event is the Pollinator Parade at
2 p.m. Join in the procession of costumed naturalists and
visitors disguised as animals that pollinate plants, such as
hummingbirds, moths, bats, bees, and, of course, butterflies.
After learning the pollination song, a procession follows
performer Ken Gallipeau around the event as he sings for all
to join in. Wear your own pollinator costume, create a costume
at our Pollinator Parade Craft station, or parade along waving
scarves and streamers!
All ages are welcome. Admission $4 per adult, $3 per

BECOME A VOLUNTEER - Bluebird Nest Box Monitor

Currently, we are looking for volunteers to monitor boxes. Most parks have between 15 to 25 boxes. Call for current park openings.
Nest box monitors are assigned to a specific park and visit the boxes once a week to identify the species of birds using the boxes and the number of
eggs or young they have. If you are age 16 or older, possess moderate bird identification skills, ability to walk through high grass meadows in hot weather,
willingness to monitor about 2 hours (one site visit) per week, record data from April through August, and send data reports to the supervisor, you can
become a nest box monitor. In early March, we clean out the boxes for the coming nesting season.

Civil War Invades Morristown
During the Civil War Encampment Weekend at Historic Speedwell!
tep onto the battlefields of the American Civil War, the struggle that altered the political, social, and economic landscape of the nation, and into the lives of those involved at the Civil
War Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12. The Second New Jersey Brigade is stationed at Historic Speedwell in Morristown and is the sponsor of this unique two-day
event that presents the lives of Civil War soldiers more vividly than textbooks.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the re-enactors lead activities throughout the eight-acre site, presenting the daily lives of soldiers and culminating
with a staged skirmish. Soldiers camps recreate daily life with authentic cooking, dress, and general setup. Cover your ears as the massive period cannon will amaze you! Witness the
musket drills, artillery drills, daily mail call, bayonet drills, and a staged skirmish each day. Marching drills include period instruments as soldiers proudly go into battle. A Civil War era
Signal Corps group authentically demonstrates how important messages were sent between units using colorful flags to send signals. See a demonstration of a recreated Civil War telegraph
station. Around every corner there is something to experience.
You will be astonished to learn about the basics of battlefield medicine for soldiers who suffered injuries or disease. Visit the medical area where re-enactors care for the wounded and
demonstrate how these emergency units ran during battles.
While enjoying your visit to the past, tour the National Historic Landmark Factory Building with an interactive, hands-on telegraph exhibit, and the Vail Home that was built more than
150 years ago. Explore the exhibits on the Speedwell Ironworks, a granary full of early farm implements, and watch the enormous 24-foot overshot waterwheel turn in the Wheelhouse.
