More importantly, penetration of internet among the day-to-day life of users has fueled the growth of internet users across the globe. In last 17 years, the number of internet users across the world has increased from 52 million in 1998 to almost 2.8 billion in 2015. This significant growth in the number of internet users has enhanced the generation of data. This enormous data generation has created the requirement of data centers. Though the dot-com era created the buzz of data center across the globe, it became a reality in the website era, because, the dot-com era witnessed data growth. The website era witnessed a generation of massive data by the enterprises and storage of data for their usage. Later, during the big data boom, potential of historical data was understood by several enterprises. Moreover, adoption of virtualization, cloud-based business operation, and analysis of consumer data fueled the requirement of data centers among large enterprises, as well as SMEs and SMBs. In the website era, most of large data enterprises and SMEs used to store the data in-house. Most of the SMEs prefer to have few racks in their server room, and large enterprises have large rooms that used to be perceived as IT rooms, used to have racks, server, and network switches. However, most of them were not using these facilities at their maximum efficiency. For instance, there was not much technology involved for cooling the infrastructure. Later, when the enterprises, face frequent disruption and damages of the high cost. During this period, few major technological innovators such as Siemens (now renamed as Unify) and AECOM started to understand the potential of a separate data center business unit and integrated solution approaches for racks, server, switches along with cooling, power backup, and different flooring. Over a period, every small unit of a data center such as flooring, roof, windows, heat management, cooling, and power backup has gone through significant technological changes. In the last decade the screen size of devices has decreased, which has given rise to portability. For instance, the users moved from Desktop to Laptop in dotcom era. During the website era, the users moved from mobile phones to smartphones. Finally, during the big data boom, the users moved towards tablet and finally small wearable devices such as smart watches. Currently, on an average, single users have been using around three devices discussed above. In addition to this, their usage has also increased rapidly in recent 4-5 years. For instance, in the US, average time spent by the users on mobile devices for data usage has increased from 18 minutes in 2008 to almost 45 minutes in 2015. During the dotcom and website era, one user was using one or two devices. The data generated by them required local storage such as CD drive or a hard drive to store those data.
