FinancialSupportforStudentsintheDoctoralProgram

Introduction
AdoctoralapplicantwillhaveearnedaMastersdegreeorhavecompleted30semesterhoursofgraduate
credit,andsubmittedscoresfromtheGeneralGREexamination(verbal,quantitative,andanalytical
writing)advancedGREisrecommendedbutoptional.GREscoremustbeatleast1100forverbaland
mathsectionstogetherand3.0foranalyticalwriting.TOEFLexaminationisrequiredforallnonnative
Englishspeakingstudentsandthelowestscoreacceptedis550forthepaperversionand213forthe
computerbasedexamination.TheDirectorofGraduateStudiesinAtmosphericScienceandChairmanwill
evaluatethecredentialsofeachapplicantforthePh.D.program,consideringabroadrangeofcriteria,
including:
1.Contentofundergraduateandgraduateprogramsandgradesearned,particularlyintheareasof
Meteorology,Physics,Mathematics,Chemistry,Geosciences,orrelatednatural/physicalsciences.
2.Lettersofrecommendationfromthree(3)individuals(preferablyfacultymembers),whoareableto
judgethecandidatesacademicabilitiesandpotentialforscholarlyresearch.
3.ScoresearnedontheGeneralGREtest(andTOEFLtest,whereapplicable).
4.Scientific,professional,andtechnicalpublications,andMastersThesis.

Program Information
TheawardoftheDoctorateofPhilosophydegreesignifiesthattherecipienthasachievedbroadknowledge
ofthedisciplineanddemonstratedresearchcompetencemeetingnationalstandardsthroughcompletionof
anacceptabledissertation.
DuringtheweekbeforetheirfirstfullsemesterattheUniversity,thestudentmusttakeaDepartmental
generalPlacementExamination,consistingofbothwrittenandoralparts.Studentswishingtoqualifyfor
candidacyforthePh.D.degreeinAtmosphericSciencemustdemonstrategeneralproficiencyin
mathematics,physics,andchemistry(whenatmosphericchemistryisthechosenareaofspecialty).Some
graduatecoursesexplicitlyrequireprerequisitecourses,e.g.,MATH3363,MATH2331,MATH2433,
GEOL3378,GEOL3342ortheirequivalentatotherinstitutions.Theexaminingcommitteewilldetermine
whatdeficienciesifanyarepresent,andtheacceptablemeansofremovingthosedeficiencies(e.g.,
courseworkwithinand/oroutsidetheDepartment,directedstudy,researchpapers).
Thefirstyearofstudieswillconcentrateoncoursesintheexpectedareaofresearch,aswellascourses
neededtoremovedeficiencies.Duringthefirstyear,thestudentisexpectedtohaveselecteda
DissertationAdvisorandconstitutedhis/herDissertationCommitteetoreflectresearchinterests.Itis
assumedthatthestudentwillcompletemostcourseworkduringthisfirstyearofstudy.Thesecondyear
willconsistofadditionalcoursework,wherenecessary,research,andfinalpreparationfortheCandidacy

ExaminationandthepresentationoftheDissertationProposal.TheoralCandidacyExaminationand
DissertationProposalshouldbecompletedduringthethirdsemesterforfulltimestudents,orbefore
completionoffivesemestersforparttimestudents.Uponsuccessfulpresentationoftheresearch
proposal,theapplicantwillbegrantedPh.D.Candidacystatus.

Sequence and Timing


PriortofirstfullsemesterinPh.D.program:
1.DepartmentalPlacementExamination.
Firstyearinprogram:
1.Appropriatecoursework.
2.Removalofalldeficiencies.
3.EstablishmentofPh.D.ResearchCommittee.
SecondyearinProgram:
1.TakingtheCandidacyExamandpresentingtheDissertationProposalduringthefirstsemester
ofthesecondyear.
2.Completionofallformalcoursework.
3.Initiationofresearch.
Thirdandsuccessiveyears:
1.Submissionofamanuscripttoapeerreviewedjournal
2.Completionanddefenseofdissertation.

Financial Support for Students in the Doctoral Program


InaccordancewithUniversityregulations,astudentacceptedintotheprogramandofferedDepartmental
support(e.g.,TeachingAssistantship(TA)orResearchAssistantship(RA))mayreceivesuchsupportfor
upto10longsemesters(5years)providedthestudentisdeemedtobemakingadequateprogresstoward
thedegreeandsuchresourcesareavailable.Itisthegoalofthedepartmentforstudentstofinishtheir
degreewithintheshortestpossibletimeconsistentwiththecompletionofanacceptabledissertation.
Studentsmustberegisteredasfulltimestudentsandmaynotholdanyadditionalemploymentwhileholding
aTAorRA.
Progresstowardthedegreewillnormallybemeasuredintermsofcoursework(maintainingatleastaB
average),eliminationofdeficienciesandtimelyselectionofaDissertationCommittee,completionof
requirementsforCandidacyandpresentationofaDissertationProposal.Afterthefirsttwosemesters,
progresswillbeevaluatedandcontinuedsupportwillbegrantedonthebasisofafavorablereviewand
availabilityofresources.Ineachsubsequentsemester,theDissertationCommitteewillreviewthe
studentsprogress,informthestudentoftheirfindings,andplaceastatementinthestudentsdepartmental
file.
