obvious reason may not
always be correct. There are
many different motivational
factors that impact an

proves to be a powerful
management tool. My biggest
lesson from this course was
the need to have employee

This course provided me with

great insight to strengths and
weaknesses in my
interpersonal communication
skills. I am also better able to
relate to others as I have a
better understanding of the
reasons behind my own and
other individuals behavior.
Knowing why I feel the way I
do about a situation is key to
being able to address the
situation in a proper manor.
This course revealed to me
that although I have been a
project manager for some
time, the industry that I am in
has hindered my project
management growth. I was
able to identify key areas that
I need work on such as project
planning and scope
management. I also learned
the importance of properly
closing out a project to learn
what was completed
effectively and what can be
improved upon for the next
project.
I have a much better
understanding of the depth of
influence that finance has on
any business. Having the
ability to understand financial
reports and financial
forecasting will benefit me in

important lesson that I learned
from this course is that I am
not nearly as interested in
finance as I once believed. I
believe this is invaluable as
this type of knowledge will
enable me to steer my career
to the aspects of business I
am interested in and will excel
at.
The various leadership styles I
learned in this course have
been invaluable in assessing
my own leadership styles and
strengths and weaknesses. I
particularly found Servant
Leadership, Transformational
Leadership and Adaptive
Leadership to be extremely
interesting. Servant
Leadership was by far my
favorite and one that I am
consciously working on daily.
The project management
simulations offered in this
course provided an invaluable
experience into the various
constraints a project leader
must manage and the
unexpected events that can
and will arise. I have been

Ethics has always been
important to me and the way I
chose to live my life. This
course provided a lot more
depth in understanding of
ethics and in just how far
ethics reach. I now realize that
the ethical values I employ in
my life have a deep impact on
many people, some of which I
may never know. With this
knowledge I try to make every
decision with a solid ethical
foundation.
This course provided a
multitude of knowledge
relating to establishing a team
and how teams function. What
I have been able to apply the
most to my everyday life is
the concept of
Interdisciplinary teams and
the value they bring to an
organization. I have
encouraged each member of
our team at work to sharpen
their skills in other areas of
our discipline so that we all
may be able to perform any

much more efficient and
powerful team.

that my unique set of
circumstances and experience
with cultures does not
necessarily account for our
society as a whole. I need to
be more open minded and

This course was interesting to
me in that is forced me to
think outside the box of what I
was used to thinking in terms
of strategy. Researching
companies such as Apple,

I have not had the opportunity
to implement any of the
assessment strategies into my
professional life, but am
looking forward to the
opportunity to do so and be a
part of a powerful change
within our organization.
This course was very practical
for me as I found the concepts
were applicable to many
everyday situations in my
organization. Probably the
biggest lesson I gained from
this course was that having an
introverted personality can be
a very positive thing. I am by
nature more of an introverted
individual and understand the
effort it takes in social settings
in order to become
extroverted for the time being.
I have gained a lot of comfort
in knowing that there are
benefits to being introverted
and this has given me a great
self confidence.

Table 2: Plus / Delta Significant Learning Experiences Structure and Transfer

Pick one of your most significant learning experiences from Table 1. Take some time to deeply reflect on the
experience. Respond to the following questions / sub-questions as explicitly as possible. Use your imagination and
creativity here this is really all about making connections, and seeing what you can learn about your learning style
(and yourself) from the experience!
Describe the task / assignment? What,
specifically, did you learn?
Be sure to address both declarative forms of
knowledge (things you learned concepts,
theories, ideas, models) as well as procedural
forms of knowledge(things you learned how to do
skills).

Although there are numerous significant learning

experiences within the core courses for the
Organization leadership degree, the one experience
that I picked for this exercise is the project
management simulations in OGL 321. These
simulations provided an opportunity to utilize the
skills we were studying within this course. Within
these simulations we discovered the dynamics of
scope, budget, and schedule and how each portion
of the triple constraint affected one another. The
simulations also provided a glimpse into risk
management and how various decisions when
dealing with a crisis would impact the scope,
budget, schedule, team members, and project as a
whole.

Why is it important to you?

What connections can you make between this
learning and other things you have learned (in
school and beyond)? What connections can
you make between what you learned and your
life roles and goals?

I can make connections between this learning

experience and both my personal and professional
lives.
In my personal life, each and everyday is project
that must be managed. There is definitely a budget
we must live by, a schedule to adhere to, and an
ever changing scope we must manage. There are
also a lot of unforeseen circumstances that come up
that can affect each of the constraints in dramatic
fashion. These simulations prepared me to expect
these unforeseen circumstances and plan
accordingly ahead of time. In doing this, the stress
level for my family has been significantly lower,

especially during one of the many occasions where

an unforeseen circumstance came up.
My professional life has been most impacted by the
lessons from these simulations as I can apply them
on almost a daily basis. I now look at projects
differently from the beginning and understand that
although the goal is to meet all elements of the
triple constraint, one or more of these elements
will more than likely suffer due to some outside
forces. In knowing this ahead of time I am able to
put together a risk management plan that will
enable the organization to move swiftly through
any obstacles that may arise.
Another lesson that was invaluable was that of
communicating with both the employees and
stakeholders. Listening to the employees concerns
and implementing their thoughts and ideas has
been very successful for me in both improving the
moral of the employees and in the overall success
of our projects.

What worked for you?

In terms of process, was there something about
the assignment structure that appealed to you?
How did this task / structure of this assignment
differ from other assignments? Was it similar to
other assignments / tasks that were meaningful
to me? What strategies, skills, procedures
proved effective in the completion of this
assignment / task? Do you see any patterns or
connections in this regard to your preferred
approach to learning such as following an
outline, keeping to deadlines, other learning or
study skills?

The major difference in terms of process of this

assignment was the interactivity of the simulations.
The only other assignment I can think of that was
similar was the Managers Workshops in OGL 200.
Most of the other assignments from this program
are in the form of read and respond, to which I do
not learn as well from. I am definitely a hands on
learner, I like to get my hands dirty and see the
results of my laborgood or bad. I learn most from
the mistakes I make and thus can apply these
lessons to future projects. The strategies that
proved effective for me in completing these
simulations were to run through the simulations
multiple times. Each time paying attention to how
the changes in approach impacted the overall

outcome of the scenario. The other strategy that

proved very effective was collaborating with fellow
students as to what strategies they employed and
what their results were. I may have actually learned
more from this aspect as I think the lesson of
having multiple perspectives in dealing with a
project can be invaluable.

What can you transfer?

Where can you apply / use these skills and
knowledge? How can you apply what worked for
you (above) to other learning goals or initiatives
in your life? Can you connect or adapt this
knowledge / skill to other areas of your life?
What kinds of metaphorical connections can you
make? Can you connect something that was
interesting or important with respect to this
knowledge / skill to something that you are
struggling with?

I can apply these skills and knowledge to every

aspect of my life. In my professional life, I can apply
the skills of collaboration in many aspects of my
job. By nature I prefer to work alone and do the job
myself. This ensures that the job is done to my
satisfaction. This however is not an efficient
approach within an organization, especially on
larger projects. I believe collaborating with both my
colleagues and subordinates is not only necessary
but hugely beneficial to my overall success and that
of the organization as well.
I would like to apply this lesson in my personal life
in the manner in which I raise my children and
communicate with my wife. As opposed to being the
father that just does everything and would rather
not be bothered, I want to involve my kids in the
various projects around the house, teach them life
lessons, and also gain their input as I go. I know
that I learn more from working with others and
observing their skills than I do from a lecture or
readings. I want my children to learn from my
example.
One area of my life I actually implemented this
some time ago is in the communication with my
wife. I learned early on in our marriage that we
needed to be a team and not two individuals. We
talk about everything and bounce our ideas off one
another. In doing this we almost always come to a

great solution to the issues we face in life. This

collaboration has become the foundation of an
extremely strong bond we share and has provided
for a very secure environment for our children.

What evidence do you have?

Do you have a plan for communicating your
learning to others? Are there any tangible
outcomes (and specific artifacts, in particular)
that serve as evidence of this knowledge / skill?

I do have a plan for communicating my learning to

others. I have already begun implementing the
lessons learned in my daily activities at work which
has had a profound impact. I have been able to
bring ideas regarding team collaboration and moral
to the owner of the company. In response he
revamped the employee review process and many
aspects of how we communicate with both our
employees and stakeholders. This has improved the
efficiency and moral of our team and has also made
a significant impact on our relationships with our
clients.

Assignment #1: Questions for Reflection

Prompt #1: Now that you have completed Assignment #1, what were the most important aspects of this
assignment? What moved you the most? Any surprises?
This was a very interesting assignment and was kind of like a trip down memory lane. One of the most
important aspects of this assignment was remembering some of the concepts and assignment that I
completed over two years ago. Although I use a lot of the lessons I learned, there are still a lot that I have
not used and thus have more or less forgotten about as time went on. This exercise forced me to go back
through my previous assignments and touch on many of the valuable concepts that I have not been using.
Another aspect of the assignment that I found to be valuable was the perspective I gained on how the
classes all tied together in one sense or another. There were many overlapping lessons such as the

importance of the various types of leadership (servant, transformational, etc). One thing that I found
surprising was the importance of assessments within organizations and how this kind of ties everything
together. I never gave too much thought to assessing the various components of an organization, other
than employee performance. Assessing the outcomes of the projects, the financial strength and quality of
leadership within an organization provides invaluable insight on how best to move forward on future
endeavors within the organization.
Prompt #2: What are your ideas in terms of how to best illustrate your growth and development over the
course of your education and experiences with the Organizational Leadership program? What are your
best ideas with respect to specific artifacts / evidence that you might present (within the context of an eportfolio) as your consider your growth and development in the Organizational Leadership Program?
My growth and development as a result of the Organization Leadership program has been incredible. Both
the core courses of the program and the general studies courses provided me with a much more well
rounded viewpoint, not only on organizations but in life as well. I have learned that leadership traits are not
necessarily something one is born with but can be developed over time, that being more introverted than
extroverted can actually be a positive trait within the context of an organization and that being a servant
leader is what I ultimately strive to be. Each of these lessons has provided me with intangibles that are not
easily accoutned for in artifacts or evidence. For instance, my personal confidence as well as my
relationships with both my colleagues and subordinates has improved dramatically. I was once in a place
were I thought I would remain with the same organization for as long as possible because I didnt have the
confidence or education to move on, but I now have aspirations and a passion to progress in my career
and lead others. With that said, my best ideas of tangible artifacts or evidence would have to be the
various papers and coursework I have prepared while going through this program.
