DefinitionofLiteracy
Literacyistheabilitytoeffectivelycommunicatewithothersverballyandinwrittenformwhileunderstandingtheinverserelationshipsofthatcommunication.Itistheabilitytoread,writeandspeakbothtobeunderstoodandto
understand.Aswemovetoasystemthatembracesliteracyinallareasofeducationitbecomesessentialthatallteachersunderstandthecomplexitiesofthewordliteracy.AlbertaEducationhasdefinedliteracyas:Literacyis
morethantheabilitytoreadandwrite.Itinvolvestheknowledge,skillsandabilities-thecompetencies-thatenableindividualstothinkcritically,communicateeffectively,dealwithchangeandsolveproblemsinavarietyofcontexts
toachievetheirpersonalgoals,developtheirknowledgeandpotential,andparticipatefullyinsociety.GovernmentofAlberta,2009b,p.6

InalignmentwiththeWCPSsix-yeardistrictvision,literacyandthefollowingthreedraftcompetencieswillbeatightfocusthroughoutthe2015-2016schoolyear.Deepeningourunderstandingofthemanyformsofliteracy,
aswellasearlyexplorationaroundthreecorecompetencieswillbepartofthetightfocusfor2015-2016aswebuildcapacitywithinourstaff.

Thisexpandedunderstandinganddefinitionofliteracywillalsobeafocusforthe2015-2016schoolyear.

Allschoolswilldevelopaschoolliteracyplaninconsultationwiththeirdiamondteam.Thisplanwillguidethefocusaroundliteracydevelopmentandutilizemanystrategies.Anexemplarofthisplanandatemplatewillbe
provided.DuringtheACEPlanvisitthisliteracyplanwillbereviewed.

AllschoolswilladministertheSTARLiteracyscreeningsoftwaretoALLstudentsataminimumoftwotimesperyear.Schoolswillbeabletoadministerthismorefrequentlyiftheysochoose.
STARdatawillbereviewedbyallPLTstoinforminstructionalpracticesand/ordeterminediagnosticassessments(e.g.F&P)aswellasinterventionsupports.
TheCRMprocessandDiamondTeammeetingswillguidetheplanningandinterventionsupportsnecessaryforbothstaffdevelopmentandstudentgrowthasdatafromvariousinstrumentswillbecontemplated.
