Birdwood High School

Stage 1 Summative Assessment Task

Areas of Study 2, 4
Collaborative Task
The following design criteria will be covered:
Investigation, problem-solving, practical application, collaboration, reflection
Task:
As a group plan, prepare and present a healthy lunch box that contains a main lunch meal, two
snacks and a drink that would be suitable to sell in a school canteen.
The research task and practical must include all members of the group for both of the tasks.
Research Task:
The following are a number of research tasks that must be completed by your group.
Your group needs to choose how you want to research them and divide them up so that
everyone is involved.
1. A survey of 20 students to find out what types of healthy food they would eat in a canteen
lunch box (main meal, drink and snacks).
- Must hand in a copy of the survey, the results as a graph and a short written report.
2. Find at least 3 healthy recipe ideas for the main meal and drink and 4 healthy snack recipes.
- A bibliography (name and page of book or internet site must be stated for each selected
recipe).
3. Suitable packaging options, where do you get the packaging from, prices, environmental
considerations?
4. What information should be on a label?
5. Research aspects of current healthy eating guidelines, in particular the SA Governments
Right Bite Strategy and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating that would be of importance
to your task. What do they recommend?
6. Food safety precautions you would need to consider and have in place when preparing your
product.
Research task must be no longer than 400 words
Bibliography must be provided
Practical
Task: Work collaboratively to design, make and present a healthy lunch box meal (2 snacks
and a lunch meal) and a drink that would be suitable to sell in your school canteen. All serves
must be presented in the appropriate packaging with a label on them. You need to make and
present a lunch box meal and drink for each member of your group.
Individual Evaluation Report
Each member of the group must complete their own evaluation of the research task and the
practical, based on the following points:
- your own performance
- how the group made collaborative decisions
- the management skills used by the group
- individual contributions to the group
- conclusions about possible improvements, such as the healthiness of the products,
presentation (packaging and labelling), food safety, group collaboration, management skills.
Evaluation Report must be no more than 400 words

Formative Assessment Task

Collaborative Lunch Box Task
Action Plan:
Your action plan requires you to identify and discuss issues that are related to your task. This
section must be done as a group.
Complete the following:
1. Make a list of all the issues your group needs to consider when designing your lunch box.
Alongside each issues you must write why it is an issue. (Look at the list in the Research
Task- healthiness of the food and drink, what students like, cost, packaging, labelling, food
safety) An example is: Cost needs to be considered because students do not want to pay a
lot of money.
2. Decide which group member does each of the required tasks. How did you decide which
task each member would do?
Include discussion about the practical task and research task for this question.
3. A justification needs to be written which states why what you have chosen is a good idea.
4. An outline of group implementation strategies.
What do you need to do to make it happen? eg. use internet to research packaging and
prices, complete survey, look in cook books, write a time plan for the practical, food order,
design and print labels.
Action Plan must be no more than 400 words
