INSTRUMENT Supervisor Feedback on Candidate Self-Reflection
OVERALL COMMENT: Dear Lena,

I enjoyed observing the lesson you presented for your third observation lesson at Portola
Springs Elementary School. You have a unique classroom, in which there is a great deal of
divergent thought present, and that is appreciated! Your Mentor Teacher is so supportive and
shared with me that you are appreciated as a teacher in the classroom. I believe you have
worked very hard preparing lessons for each of my visits and that is appreciated as well!
For this lesson you chose to focus on Rubric 7: Engaging Students in Learning. You mentioned
that you wanted students to engage in academic discourse, which they did. By being in the
small groups, this gave them a chance to be able to have more opportunity to engage with
other students in discourse. I agree that there were great discussions. The topics for
discussion were those that could and did incite impassioned opinions on the part of the
students. I liked the way you handled the turning point by bringing in a personal asset of a
student. The way you handled it, impromptu, was brilliant! This is what great teachers do, and
it was so effective. The student had an Aha! moment, and learning was made visible.
Lena, it has been a pleasure to have been your student teaching supervisor for Winter Quarter.
I wish you all the best in your future in education!
All the Best,
Dorothy Flynn
