The article, written by Craig, 2013 outlines a qualitative study illustrated by both a questionnaire

and survey process. The study focused on the students from a graduate and online program and
their use with both Wiki and blogs. The students were a part of teacher preparation program in
English as a Second Language (Craig, 2013 p.1) A few of these participants were active ESL
teachers and the others were not but all had experience with the use of Wikis.
The integration of technology into coursework and assignments are practiced in many
institutions. As part of the assessment program with the future ESL instructors, sixteen
participants were examined over a one year period (Craig, 2013)
Exploring Wikis
According to this article, (Craig, 2013), Wiki was created for three reasons: language learning,
professional development and parents to become more involved in their childrens ESL
classroom (p.6).
*Integrated into language learning- may serve as a valuable tool for teacher preparation and both
oral or literacy development. This online tool will create online community, group interaction,
shared responsibility, language usage and self-awareness. Participants have free access to create
content and interact accordingly on the web on his or her own pace and flexibility.
*Wikis does allow easy accessibility and learners are able to edit and revise discussions because
of the simplicity of the online software
*Wikis can be used and set up like an encyclopedia for future expansion and can be public or
private (Craig, 2013 p.7).
*Participants of wikis allow learners to become editors, writers, evaluators and review peer
participants work critically.
*Discussion and content sharing can be promoted in a professional manner
*ESL participants are learner-centered and teachers can monitor learning
*Wikis allows the individual/learner to be creative when designing or developing his or her page.
He or she will be exposed to cultural tools, learning, diversity and artifacts.
*Wikis can be used for professional development, as a journal, and access to student pages,
newcomers and interactive resources (Craig, 2013 p.8).
Other uses that may be considered in terms of the actual ESL learning environment
include: (Craig, 2013 p. 8).
Creating a grade-level Wiki for collaboration between ESL and regular education
teachers.
Glossary of terms and vocabulary words created by second language learners.

Content Wiki to support CALLA or SIOP instruction.

Individual student Wikis based on projects and language learning.
Journaling and book discussionsclass, group, or individual.
Portfolio Wikis based on content instruction or writing.
Student presentations reflecting content and language
This scholarly article is very helpful and a resourceful document and can be used as a guide for
potential instructors and those currently in the field. It can help with the use of Wikis for
instructors and ESL teachers. The author is a well know individual at the Middle Tennessee State
University. This paper was presented in Education Resource Information Center ERIC.
