FOREWORD
ThisIndianStandardwasadoptedbytheBureauofIndianStandards,after
thedraftfinalizedbytheFireFightingSectionalCommitteehadbeenapprovedby
theCivilEngineeringDivisionCouncil.
Allbuildingsdependingupontheoccupancyuseandheightareprotectedby
fixedfirefightinginstallationsaspertheprovisionslaiddowninSP7(Part4).The
fixedfirefightinginstallationsareprovidedinmultistoreyedbuildingofheight15
metresoraboveandalsoothercategoriesofbuildingsoflesserheightbutwith
specialrisks/basement,etc.Similarly,allfactories/manufacturingindustriesalsogo
forinstallationoffixedfirefightingsystemforprotectionofthepropertyandlife.
Thesystemmaybeintheformofwetriser,externalhydrantorintheformof
sprinkler/emulsifiers,etc,orallofthem.Themostimportantcomponentinsucha
systemisthefirepump.Acarefullychosenfirepumpofappropriatecapacityand
installedproperlywillformthebackboneofsuchsystem.Evenafterinstallation,it
isabsolutelyessentialthatthefirepumpsareproperlymaintainedandregularly

testedsothattheyareinserviceableconditionandcomeintooperationinstantlyat
thetimeofexergencies.
Therequirementsinregardtotheinstallationandmaintenanceofinternalor
externalfirehydrantsarecoveredinseparateIndianStandards(seeIS3844andIS
13039).
ThecompositionoftheCommitteeresponsibleforformulationofthis
standardisgiveninAnnexA.
Forthepurposeofdecidingwhetheraparticularrequirmentofthisstandard
iscompliedwith,thefinalvalue,observedorcalculated,expressingtheresultofa
testoranalysis,shallberoundedoffinaccordancewithIS2:1960Rulesfor
roundingoffnumericalvalues(revised).Thenumberofsignificantplacesretained

3TERMINOLOGY
Forthepurposeofthisstandard,thefollowingdefinitionsshallapply.

3.1StaticWaterTank
Undergroundorsurfacewatertank,constructedtostorewaterforfire
fightingpurpose.

3.2TerraceTank
Aconcrete/masonry/plastic/steeltankconstructedorerectedonterraceof
buildingforfirefightingpurpose.

3.3PrimingTank
Asmalltankerectedinside/overthepumphouseandabovethefirefighting
pumpstokeepthepumpcasingandsuctionofthefirepumppermanentlyflooded.
Thisisrequiredincaseofnegativesuction.

3.4FootValvecumStrainer
3.4.1
Avalvefixedinthesuctionstrainerofthefirepumpwhichopensonly
inwardstoallowinflowofwaterintothepumpsuctionandfirepumpwhenthe
pumpisactuatedautomatically/manually,ThisisrequiredincaseofNegative
suction.

Apumpofsmallcapacitywhichissettocomeintooperationautomatically
withdropinstaticpressureinthesystemandtoautomaticallystopwhenthepreset
pressureisreachedagain.

3.6TerracePump
Anelectricallydrivenpump,locatedontheterraceconnectedtoaterrace
tankwithgatevalveonsuctionsideandtotheinternalhydrantsystemwithnon
returnvalveondeliveryside.

3.7FirePump
Anelectric/dieselpumpinstalledatstaticwatertanktochargethewetriser
systems/sprinklersystem,etc.

3.8StandbyPump
Apumpofsamecapacityasfirepump,drivenbyadieselengineorconnected
toanyotheralternatesourceofelectricsupply.

3.9PumpPanel
Panelcomprisingstarting,stoppingandindicatingdevicesoffirepumps.

3.10PressureSwitch
Aswitchconnectedondeliverylineoffirepump,orinthebodyofhydro
pneumatictankatpresetpressurelevelsodesignedtoautomaticallystartthefire
pumporjockeypump,asthecasemaybe,whenthepressureinthesystemfalls
belowthepresetlevel.

3.11CirculationReliefValve
Thecirculationreliefvalveputinbelowtheshutoffpressuretoprovide
circulationandtherebyrelievetheextrapressureinthepump.

4FIREPUMPSANDPUMPHOUSE
4.1
Thepumphouseshouldbelocatedpreferablyoutsidethebuildingwitha
minimumclearanceof6mfromadjoiningbuildings.Thepumphouseshouldhave
adequatenaturalventilationwithwindows,fittedwithexpandedmetalfor
protection.Inordertofacilitateproperinstallationandmaintenanceoffirefighting

pumps,thereshouldbeprovisionofmildsteelgirderofappropriatexsectionat
suitableheightinpumphouseforfixingchainpulleyblock.

4.2
Ifthepumphousehasadieselpump,theexhaustpipeofthedieselengine
shouldbeextendedtooutsidethepumphouseandexhaustdischargedatan
appropriateheightintheopenair.

4.3
Thefloorofthepumphouseshouldbeslopedtothefarthestendtodrain
awayanywaterleakingfromglands,valves,etc.

4.4
Thepumphouseshouldhavenormallighting,andalsoemergencylighting
facility,eitherfromasecondsourceorfromthegenerator.

4.5
Ifthepumphouseislocatedinsidethebuilding,eitherongroundfloororin
thebasement,itshouldbeseparatedfromtherestportionwithawallhaving2hfire
ratingandfirecheckdooratitsentrancehaving1hfirerating.Forpumphousein
basement,forcedmechanicalventilationshouldbeprovided.Pumphouseinground
floorshouldbelocatedonperipheryofbuildingwithaccessdirectlyfrom
outside/openarea.Thepumphouselocatedinthebasementshouldalsohaveeasy
accessibilityfromoutsidepreferablythroughramp.

5ARRANGEMENTOFPUMPS
5.1
Thelayoutplansofpumpsinstalledandfirewaterlinesshouldbedisplayed.
Thepumphouseshouldbeofadequatedimensiontohouseallthepumpswith
suction,deliverypipes,fittingsandstartercontrolpanel,airvessel,etc,with
adequatecirculationarea.Adequateheadroomclearanceallaroundthepumpfor
maintenanceshallbemadeavailable.Aminimumclearanceof1matfrontandback
and0.75monsidesandbetweenpumpsshouldbeprovidedforallmajorpumps
exceeding22801/mincapacity.Forsmallerpumps,includingjockeypumps,the
clearancerequiredshouldbe0.75matfrontandbackand0.60matsidesand
betweenpumps.Theheadroomclearanceforallpumphousesshouldbeminimum
2.75m.

Thepumpcontrolpanelwhichshouldalsobehousedinthepumproombut
easilyaccessible,shouldbeofadequatedimensiontoincorporatetripplepooland
neutral(TPN)switchandhighrupturecapacity(HRC)switchbothofadequate
capacity,selectorswitchammeter,voltmeterandphaseindicatinglights,single
phasepreventer,startandstoppushbuttons,automanualswitch,auxiliary
contractorsforinterlocking/sequenceofoperationsandallnecessarygauges,fittings
requiredtocompletethesystem(thebusbarshouldbeofcopperofappropriate
thickness).Thepanelshouldbefloormountedwithpropergroutingwiththefloor
andbecompartmentalized.Thegaugethicknessofpanelshouldbe1.8mm.

5.3
Wheredieselpumpisprovided,itshouldhaveaseparatepanel,alsolocatedin
thesamepumproomoradjoiningseparateroom.Thepanelshouldhaveitsseparate
battery,withbatterychargingdevice,andautomanualchangeoverarrangement.It
shouldincorporateaninterlockingdevicewiththemainpumppanelsothatboth
theelectricpumpandthedieselpumpdonotoperatesimultaneously.Adequate
precautionshouldbetakentoavoidspillageofdieseltoavoidanyfireexergency.

5.4
Airvesselofadequatecapacityshouldbeinstalledinthepumphouse,with
pressureswitchesincorporatedonthedeliveryline.Thereshouldbetwopressure
switchesonewithupperandlowerlimitforjockeypumpandanotheronewith
onlyforlowerpressurelimitforthemainpump.Stoppingofmainpumpsshouldbe
onlybymanualpushbuttonwhichshouldbeprominentlyindicatedonthepump
panel.

5.5
Similarlowerpressurelimitswitchshouldalsobeincorporatedinthediesel
pumptomakethestartautomaticallyatpresetdropinpressure.

6INSTALLATIONOFFIREPUMPS
6.1
Thecapacityofthefirepumpshouldbecarefullychosentomeetthe
maximumrequirementfortherisk

Oftheabove,(a)and(b)arebasicallythepumpstobeinstalledontheterrace
tofeedtheDownComerSystem.Theotherpumpsaretobehousedinthepump
house.Thepumphousemaybebelowthelevelofthewatertankorconstructed
abovethewatertankdependingupontheengineeringconveniences.Forfire
fightingpurpose,apumphousehavingthepumpsbelowthewatertankisalways
desirable,asthiseliminatesthenecessitytohavenegativesuctionincorporating
primingtank,footvalveandotherextravalves,etc.Allpumpsarerequiredtobe
startonAuto,whenthereisadropofpressureinthemains.Thesearerequiredto
bepresetonpredeterminedpressuresuitabletoparticularrisk.

6.2
Ifthepumpiselectricdriven,thecapacityofthepumpvisvisits
revolutionsperminutemustmatchwiththeelectricmotorbeingchosenforthe
samejob.Electricmotorsrequiredtofeedthepumpupto22801/minareusually
runningat2900rev/minandthepumpsrequiredtomatchthemotorsmustalso
runatthesamerevolutionsperminute.ThesepumpsareknownasSingleStage
PumpsandthesuctionisattheendofthepumpsothatthesearecalledEnd
SuctionPumps.Smallcapacitypumps/jockeypumpsarealsoavailable/requiredtobe
usedinmultistagedesign.Thespeedsofthesepumpsaresuitablefor2polemotor
or4polemotor.

6.3
Thefirefightingpumpsarealmostinvariablycentrifugaltypeexceptingin
sometypicalcaseswhereverticalturbineorsubmersiblepumpsareinstalled.After
thecapacityofthepumpandmotorhasbeencarefullychosen,tomatcheachother
perfectly,installationofthepumpsinthepumphouseshouldbedonewithutmost
care.Ashasbeensaidabove,thepumphouseshallhaveadequatespacestokeep
enoughcirculationareawithinthepumphouseforthepumpoperatorintimesof
emergencyormaintenance.Thepumpandthemotorsarealwayscasesconnected
togetherbyconnectingcouplersandtheyaremountedonacommonbaseplate
whichissuppliedbythepumpmanufacturersalongwiththepump.Thebaseplate
shallbeofsufficientlengthandwidthtohousethepumpandthemotor
comfortably.

6.4
Inthefirststageoftheinstallation,pumpsaretobemountedonaconcrete
foundationhavingminimumgradeofreinforcedconcreteasM15.Thefoundation
shallbeofadequatethicknessanddimensiondependinguponthetypeofthepump
whichwillbeinstalled.Thethicknessofthefoundationshallbe50mmminimum
forsmallpumpsupto9001/mincapacity,75mmforpumpsupto22801/min

capacityand100mmforbiggerpumpsupto45001/min.Forextraordinarybig
pumps,thethicknessmaygoupto150mm.Thesizeofthefoundationshallcover
thefulllengthandwidthofthepumpandatleast150mmonthefrontandbackof
thepumpand75mmonthesidesasclearance.Thefoundationshallbedesignedas
perIS2974(Part3)andIS2974(Part4).

6.5
Itisrecommendedtoprovideajockeypumptotakecareofsystemlosses.The
capacityofthejockeypumpshallneitherbelessthan3percent(withaminimumof
1801/min)normorethan10percentoftheinstalledpumpingcapacity.

6.6
Eachpumpshallbeprovidedwithapressuregaugeonthedeliveryside
betweenthepumpandthenonreturnvalveandamanufacturersplateindicatingthe
deliveryhead,capacityandthenumberofrevolutionsperminute.

6.7
Pumps(otherthanJockeypumps)shouldbeabletodevelopheadofgreater
than65percentofratedheadatcapacityof150percentofratedcapacity.Therated
headforverticalturbinepumpswillberatedbowlhead.Theshutoffheadofpumps
(otherthanjockey)shouldnotexceed120percentofratedheadforhorizontal
pumpsand140percentofratedbowlheadofverticalturbinepumps.

6.8
Eachfireservicepumpshallbeprovidedwithanindependentsuctionpipe
withoutanysluiceorcutoffvalvestherein,unlessthepumpissituatedbelowthe
levelofthewatersupplyinwhichcasesluiceorcutoffvalvesisessential.Wherethe
NetPositiveSuctionHead(NPSH)availableatsiteislessthan0.5minexcessofthe
actualvaluerequiredat150percentofthedutypointasperthemanufacturers
curvesorwherethewatersupplyhasfibrousorequallyobjectionablematterin
suspensionormudand/orsandliabletocausedepositionintheinstallation,suction
pipe(s)shallbeinstalledinajackwell(suctiontank),fedthroughapipe/pipesof
appropriatediafromthemainwatersupply.Atthesupplyendofthemajortank,
wherethemainsupplysourceisatadistanceexceeding20m,asluiceorgatevalve
shallbeprovided.Fromfirewaterstoragereservoirtwoseparateconnectionsare
takentosuctionheader(fromeachcompartmentoffirewaterstorage.)

6.9
Thediameterofthesuctionpipeshallbesuchthattherateofflowofwater
throughitdoesnotexceed1.5m/swhenthepumpisdeliveringatitsrated
discharge.If,however,thepumpissituatedbelowthelevelofitswatersupply,the
diameterofthesuctionpipe/headershallbebaseduponarateofflowof2m/s.

6.10
Whenthepumpisabovethelevelofitswatersupply,thereshallbeafoot
valveandaprimingarrangement,thelatterconsistingofatank(havingacapacity
atleastthreetimesthatofthesuctionpipeincludingthepumpcasingfromthepump
tothefootvalve),connectedtothedeliverysideofthepumpbyametalpipehaving
aminimuminternaldiameterof100mminthecaseofcentrifugalpumpswitha
stopvalveandanonreturnvalvethereinofthesamesize.Adependable
independentfillingarrangementandalevelindicatorshallbeprovidedforthe
primingtank.Theprovisionofavacuumgaugeforthesuctionpipeisrecommended.
Wherecircumstancespermit,centrifugalpumpsshallbefixedpreferablybelowthe
levelofthewatersupply.Ifthepumpisautomaticinaction,itshallnecessarilybeso
fixed.

6.11
However,forlightandordinaryhazardoccupanciesifthepriming
arrangementsaresuchastoensurethatthesuctionpipeshallbeautomatically
maintainedfullofwaternotwithstandingaseriousleakagetherefrom(thepump
beingautomaticallybroughtintoactiontoreplenishtheprimingtankshouldthe
latterbedrawnuponatagreaterratethantherateatwhichitisfedfromanyother
source),positivesuctionmaynotbeinsisted.Insuchcases,thecapacityofthe
primingtankneednotexceed4501andthediameteroftheprimingpipeneednot
exceed50mm.Eachpumpshallbeprovidedwithanautomaticbypassconnection
andreliefvalvesetbelowtheshutoffpressure.Itshallprovidecirculationof
sufficientwatertopreventthepumpfromoverheatingwhenoperatingwithclosed
deliveryandnodischarge.Thecirculationreliefvalveshoulddischarge
approximately35percentofthepumprating.
TestLineEachpumpshallbeprovidedwithtestlineandshutoffvalvefor
individualtestingofpumpswithoutdischargingthesystem.

6.12
Pumpsshallnotbeinstalledintheopen.Thepumproomshallbesolocated
astobebotheasilyaccessibleandwhereanyfallingmasonryandthelikefromother
buildingsoccasionedbyfireorothercause,cannotdamagethepumproom.
Normally,pumproomsshallbelocated6mawayfromallsurroundingbuildingsand
overheadstructures.Wherethisisnotfeasible,theymaybeattachedtoabuilding
providedaperfectseperationwallhaving4hfireratingisconstructedbetweenthe
pumproomandtheattachedbuilding,theroofofthepumproomisofRCC
constructionatleast100mmthickandaccesstothepumproomisfromtheoutside.
Thepumproomsshallnormallyhavebrick/concretewallsandnoncombustible
roofwithadequatelighting,ventilationanddrainagearrangements.

Thesubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s)supplyingpowertothefirepump(s)
shallbeofincombustibleconstructionandshallbelocatedatleast6mawayfromall
surroundingbuildings.Wherethisisnotfeasible,alldoorandwindowopeningsof
thesurroundingbuildingswithin6mofthesubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s)
shallbeprotectedbysinglefireproofdoorsand6mmthickwiredglassesinsteel
frameworkrespectively.Likewise,roofeaves,ifanyofthesurroundingbuildings
fallingwithin6mofthesubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s),shallbecutandwall
raisedasaparapet.Theaboveprovisionsshallalsoapplywhenthesubstation(s)and
D.G.House(s)arewithin6mofeachother.
Wherethesubstation(s)andD.G.House(s)areattachedtobuildings,afour
hourratedwallshallbeconstructedtosegregatethesubstation(s)andD.G.
House(s).ThisshallbeofRCCconstructionatleast200mmthickorofmasonry
constructionatleast230mmthick.

6.14
TransformercubiclesinsidethesubstationsshallbeseparatedfromH.T.and
L.T.cubiclesandfromeachotherbywallsofbrick/stone/concreteblocksor355
mmthicknessorofRCCof200mmthicknesswithdooropenings,ifany,therein
beingprotectedbysinglefireproofdoorshaving2hourfireresistance.Thesub
station(s)and/orD.G.House(s)shallalsobeseperatedfromeachotherasabove.
Transformersinstalledoutdoors,whicharesupplyingpowertofirepump(s)shall
alsobelocatedatleast6mawayfromallsurroundingbuildings[includingsub
station(s)and/orD.G.House(s)].Wherethisisnotfeasible,alldoorandwindow
openingsofthebuilding(s)[includingsubstation(s)and/orD.G.House(s)within6
mofthetransformers]shallbeprotectedbysinglefireproofdoorsand6mmthick
wiredglassesinsteelframeworkrespectively.Likewise,roofeavesofthebuilding(s)
fallingwithin6mofthetransformersshallbecutandwallraisedasaparapet.Blast
wallsofbricks/stone/concreteblocksof355mmthicknessorofRCCof200mm
thicknessshallbeconstructedbetweentransformersandthesewallsshallbe
extendedhorizontally600mmbeyondtheextremitiesofthetransformersand
vertically600mmabovethehighestpointofthetransformers.

6.15
Theelectricsupplytothepumpset(s)shallbeentirelyindependentofall
otherequipmentinthepremises,thatis,evenwhenthepowerthroughoutthe
entirepremisesisswitchedoff,thesupplyofthepumpshallcontinuetobeavailable
uninterrupted.Thiscanbeachievedbytakingtheconnectionforthepump(s)from
theincomingsideofthemainL.T.Breaker.However,incaseswheretwoormore
transformersand/orsourcesofsupplyareconnectedtoacommonbusbarorwhere
thereisprovisionofa

buscouplerbetweenthebusbarsections,theconnectionmaybetaken
throughthebusbars.

protectedbyautomaticsprinklersystem.

7MAINTENANCE
7.1
Thefirepumpshallbemaintainedregularlyandproperly.Therefore,itis
absolutelyessentialthatsomeoneresponsiblepersonshouldbegiventhechargeof
ensuringthatthefirepumpsareproperlymaintained.

7.2
Thefollowingmaintenancescheduleshallbemaintained.
7.2.1
Afterthefirefightingpumphasbeencommissionedandthesystemhasbeen
takenoverbytestingitaccordingtotheperformanceparameterslaiddownforthe
firepump,thisshouldberecordedinamaintenanceregister,tobekeptinthepump
house.Theinitialtestshouldshowthefollowing:
a.Flowobtainedat7kgf/cm2,
b.Flowobtainedat4.5kgf/cm2(65percentof7kg),and
c.Pressuregaugerecordingat120percentof7kg.

7.3
Afterthisinitialtakeoverofthepump,thefollowingshallbetheroutine
maintenanceschedule.
7.3.1DailyCheck
a.TestingoftheJockeyPump
Testthejockeypumpdailybyopeningthedeliveryvalve/hosereelvery
slightlytoallowthepressuretodropuptothepresetlevel.Notethetiming
takenbythejockeypumptorestorethepressureautomaticallybycutoff
switch.
b.MainPump
Themainpumpshallbetesteddailyatleastfor5min.Releasethe
systempressurebyopeningthehydrantvalvepartially.Thejockeypumpwill
comeinoperation.Openthevalvefullywhenfurtherdropinpressurewhich
willallowthemainpumptostartautomatically.Closethedeliveryoutletand

allowthepumptorunfor5mineverymorning.
c.Checkthepumpglands,packings,etc,andreplacethedamagedglandfor
packingwheneverfounddamagedorwornout.
7.3.2WeeklyCheck
a.Checkbearingsgreasecutonceaweekandlubricateasneeded.
b.Cleaningofstartercontactseveryweek.
c.Checktheinsulationresistanceofpumpmotorcircuiteveryweek.
d.Checktheenginefueloiltankandensurethatthisisofappropriategradeand
quality.
e.Checkthequantityoffueloilinthetank.Thisshouldbesufficientfor4h
runningwithoutreplenishment.Checkthesludgeandsedimenttrapas
providedintheauxiliaryequipmentlist.Checktheinspectionandcleaning
hole,checkthebattery/batteriesrequiredforstartingoftheengineandensure
thattheseareinsatisfactorycondition.Alsocheckthebatterycharging
arrangementbytrickiercharger.
Foreverycoldareas,spaceheatingisnecessarytokeeptheenginein
reasonablywarmconditionforimmediatestarting,Ifso,ensurethattheroom
heatingarrangementisworkingsatisfactory.
f.Startingdieselengineonceeveryweekandrunitfor10min.Thestarting
shouldbetestedbyswitchingoffthecurrentandallowingsystempressureto
dropuptothepresetlevelfordieselengine.Interlockarrangementwith
powersupplyshouldberestored.
g.Checkalignmentofpumpmotors,nuts,bolts,couplings,couplingguard,etc,
onceeveryweekafterthepumphasrunforcontinuous15min.
7.3.3
InspectionshallbecarriedoutaspertherequirementsgiveninIS1710,IS
5120,IS6070andIS9137.

7.4
Manufacturersshallprovidealistoffastmovingspares.
