Acceptance to Nazi Ideology: Hitler style
The first technique that Hitler used to get Germans to accept and promote Nazi ideology
was promising security. He wanted to ensure the people of Germany that he had their backs and
protect them at all cost-that is, if they promote the Nazi ideals hes laid out for them of course.
Hitler, says Goetz Aly, was a "feel good dictator," a leader who not only made Germans
feel important, but also made sure they were well cared-for by the state(Cowen 1). This
was a quality that Hitler himself implemented into his rule. He tried to make the Germans feel as
though he was looking out for the good of the people rather than himself. This helped them
accept Nazi ideals because they thought he was for the German people when in reality he was
not. To do so, he gave them huge tax breaks and introduced social benefits that even today
anchor the society(Cowen 1). In doing this, Hitler gives the Germans no choice but to support
him and accept his beliefs. People want to have leaders that are going to do things that help their
economy and Hitler was just that. It was really hard for the Germans to get by especially during
the war so him doing this, made their lives much easier. So of course theyre gonna want to
accept his Nazi ideology. He also ensured that even in the last days of the war not a single
German went hungry(Cowen 1). One thing people like more than anything is security for
themselves and their families, Hitler knew that, so he used it to the best of his advantage. This
was sort of a sly way of using bribery as Hitler would give them Germans so much in order to
get them to follow him. Along with promising and providing security to the German people in

order to have them accept Nazi ideology, he also promised to hold onto and carry out traditional
German values.
The German people had a lot of pride in their nation, and held on tight to traditional
German values, so to persuade them, Hitler told them he too would uphold those values. Hitler
and his followers believed that re-arming and expanding Germanys armed forces was
essential for the defence of the nation(Llewellyn 1). By instilling this idea in the German
people, they are slowly but are leaning towards accepting Nazi ideology. And with this, he was
able to recruit and build up his troops and his force of Nazis as well. As this continued, it became
easier for the Germans to feel more open to his Nazi principles. As you can see, Hitler didnt
have to try too incredibly hard to gain the trust of the German people when it came to his ideals
and ethics. Hitler in particular, dreamed of unifying the German-speaking Aryan peoples
of Europe, into a greater German state. To achieve this, Hitler believed his regime would
need to acquire lebensraum, or living space, to accommodate the needs of the new
Germany(Llewellyn 1). Hitler always used different tactics to please and accomodat the
Germans. So he did so by implementing lebensraum to house them. By using these tactics to
house them it made people want to accept Nazi ideals because of all the good they thought he
was doing for them. Hitler frequently spoke of protecting long standing German values,
including Christian beliefs and volkisch connections to the land(Llewellyn 1). This meant a
lot to the Germans that Hitler would protect their traditions and values being that that was
everything to them. Having a leader in charge that gives you the freedom to practice your
countrys traditional religions and values is so important. This was a big thing that led the
Germans to embracing Nazi principles. As well as promising to uphold traditional German
values, Hitler also used propaganda to draw the Germans toward Nazi ideology.

Another one of Hitlers strongest techniques used to get Germans to accept and promote
Nazi ethics was by using propaganda. He also cultivated his public image to an obsessive
degree, ensuring that it lay at the heart of all things in the Nazi state(Brainz 1). By doing
this people were constantly reminded of the face of Hitler and of all he could do for Germany. If
he was being plastered all over Germany, that meant there was no on or nothing else to slander
him or the Nazis. This really helped him because as a leader it can be hard to keep people from
getting distracted or seeing from someone else's perspective. By doing this, the Germans had no
chance but to see from only his perspective. Mythology and folktales were extremely
important to the Nazis idea of volk and tradition(Brainz 1). Hitler liked the Nazis to
implement these myths and stories in order to give Germans the wrong idea about their real
ideals. However, the German people seemed to listen to them and go along with it. This helped
them to be more perceptive to Nazi ideology and made them want to promote it. Folktales were
very popular too amongst the Germans and had helped the Germans accept and open up to Nazi
principals. Both at home and in occupied territory, posters were a powerful means to
simply communicate the main Nazi policies, through simplified and metaphorical
imagery(Brainz 1). This was prominent to Hitlers propaganda and in censoring everything the
Germans saw and read. He wouldnt dare let them get any opposing ideas from outside forces.
So what better way to spread Nazi policies than by hanging posters everywhere in Germany. The
imagery used in the posters was very powerful as well as it made the Nazis and Hitler look as
though they were for the good of the average German person. That is what really pulled them in

when it came to supporting Nazi ideals. By using propaganda, Hitler was able to get the Germans
to accept and promote Nazi principles easily. He also used censorship which helped a lot too. By
using all these different tactics and techniques, Hitler became very successful in getting the
people of Germany to see everything from his perspective.
