Lesson Title/Topic: I can Rhyme


Kindergarten/ ELA
Standards/Rationale: TEK: K.2.(C)
Lesson Objectives: The students should be able to orally generate rhymes in response to spoken
words.
Materials: story, rhyming dominoes, rhyming clip cards, clip or clothes pin
Time allotment: 30 minutes
Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)
The teacher will:
Focus/Mental Set: (5 minutes)
-The teacher will begin the lesson by
reading this short passage aloud to the

students.
-The teacher must read the passage clearly
so that the students automatically notice
that the words sound alike.
-After reading the passage, the teacher will
ask the students:
What did you notice about the story?
Did some of the words sound alike?
Why do you think they sound alike?
What makes the words different? The
beginning sound? The middle sound? Or
the ending sound?
Teacher Input: (10 minutes)
-The teacher will show the following

The student will:


-The student will follow along while the
teacher reads the passage.
-The students should be moving their
finger as the words are being read, in order
to work on tracking and to ensure that they
are focused.
-The student should be able to notice that
the story had several words that sounded
similar.
-They will learn that the words that sound
alike are words that rhyme.
-They should be able to acknowledge that
the beginning sound of each of the words:
cat, sat, mat, hat, and rat, are what
differentiates the words from the others.

-The student will watch the video:

-The teacher should instruct the students to
begin singing along.
-After the video the teacher will explain
that words rhyme whenever words have the
same beginning, middle, or ending sound.
-The teacher will take the words from the
video to examine: pig, jig, fig, ect.
-The teacher will show the students that in
those words the words have the ending
sound in common.
-Each new word is formed by adding a new
letter to the same base sound, ig.

-The student will sing along with the video.


-The student must acknowledge that the
words all have the same ending sound.
New words are formed by adding a new
letter to the beginning base of ig.

Guided Practice: (5 minutes)


-The teacher will use the rhyme clip cards.
-The teacher will read the word at the top
of the card.
-The teacher will read the two words under
it.
-The teacher will ask which word sounds
like the top word. Example:

-The student will listen to the teacher read


the rhyme card.
-The student must decide which word
matches the top word.
Example:

This is a snake. Which two words sound


the same: snake-bike or snake-cake.
The teacher must stress the ending sound
/ake/ so that it stands out to the students.
-Once the students pick which word
matches snake, the teacher will pick a
student to place the pin or clip on the
corresponding picture.

-The students must acknowledge that the

-A student will place the clip on the word
that goes with the top word.

Independent Practice: (5 minutes)


-The teacher will have constructed a
rhyming domino game.
-There should be card stock that is cut into
even rectangles.
-A line should be drawn in the middle of
the card.
-Two words that do not rhyme with each
other should be written on the cards.
-The words chosen can either be spelt
similarly or different (example: fat and cat
or bear and care.
-The teacher should split the deck in half
between two students.
-The teacher will assign an A or B or 1 or 2
to each student in every group to determine
who goes first and second.
-The teacher must explain the rules of the
game.
{- The first player will lay down the first
card.
-The other player will try to see if they can
put a rhyming match that corresponds to
the card the other played.
-If they cannot, the other player goes.
-The player with no cards left wins.}
-The students should be given 5 minutes to
play the game.

-The student will listen as the teacher

the person next to you a high five. Tell your
share buddy a sentence that has rhyming
words in it. Example: My fat cat had a
hat.
