Body
Students will watch 2 videos one on how recycling works how recyclables are separated in a factory and
what they are turned into. The other video and information/resource links take the student to fun and
interesting facts about what recycled material can be transformed into and other energy saving equations. A
couple of examples; one aluminium can is able to power your TV for an afternoon session of cartoons and
10 plastic bottles can be turned into one fleece. These are motivating facts as recycled examples are made
relevant and placed in real world context. Students are asked to contribute two interesting facts onto the
class Padlet (QR code provided). Also provide two images related to facts and upload onto Padlet. These
are shared and discussed.
The programme Canva is introduced. Teacher shows own example of a promotional recycling poster created
using the programme. Teacher shares important facts as to what poster should include and marking rubric.
Also included is a brief practical session on how the programme works and handy tips on how to operate.
Key Questions:
What can waste be transformed into? (energy and products)
How will you convey your recycling message in the poster you will create?
Lesser ability students: Can contribute just one statement to Padlet. Also have pre-populated template
posters to make process easier
Extension students: What can food scraps be turned into and used for? Use Britannica Quest. Able to
include in poster if they like
Conclusion
Posters are shared through Canva. Each contribution is valued and class discussion encouraged. Students
are asked to think of a handy fact as to what rubbish can be recycled and transformed into, use different to
their own share with class
