Cross Curricular Standards Summary

During the week of The Circulatory System Unit, the teacher will be able to enhance
student learning by incorporating this science standard across curriculum. Government is a topic
that can easily be implemented across the curriculum. Integrating the content of government into
math, language arts, and art will give the students the opportunity to apply what they learning
and deepen their understanding. It will also allow the students to see the connections to other
subject areas and parts of their life. Taking a hands-on approach and interweaving the
government theme and topic throughout the school day enhances student learning and
achievement.
In the subject area of math, students will work through multi-step word problems about
the voting comparing the number of votes that different candidates get in an election. Students
will first work through problems all together with the teacher and then they will work in groups
to solve some multi-step problems. As their assessment, they will create their own real world,
multi-step word problems like they ones they have solved about the number of votes that
different candidates got in an election. This will allow the students to apply their knowledge of
voting to real-world situations with different candidates. This will stretch students mathematical
ability because they will have to write their own multi-step, math word problems and also
convert between different types of measurements. For Language Arts, students will do two cross
curricular activities. First off, students will conduct short research project on the current governor
of Alabama, Robert Bentley. They will learn how to research about a topic and then present on
their findings by writing a report about the life of Robert Bentley and the important contributions
that Robert Bentley has done for the state of Alabama as governor. This also incorporates in

Social Studies as well because they are learning about an important historical figure. In the other
activity for Language Arts, students will read a book titled Shh! Were Writing the Constitution
by Jean Fritz which is all about the background of creating the Constitution. Students will write a
short summary on what they learned about the Constitution including why and how the
Constitution was written. They will have to use vocabulary from the book, while also providing
3 sentences to describe why the Constitution and 3 sentences how the Constitution was written.
In order for students to explore the content creatively, art will provide opportunities to
use a couple of different materials to make a 3-dimensional model of a tree to model the 3
branches of government using a tree. This activity will serve to reinforce the idea of government
as a tree with different parts while also providing students with the opportunity to use multiple
materials to create a 3-dimensional work of art. Students will get to be creative while still have to
label the tree and the branches of the tree which will help to reinforce the content they have
learned. These cross-curricular activities will allow students to be engaged and immersed in the
content of The Alabama Government Unit to enhance learning and improve student achievement.
