Reflection #4

I conducted this interview during my first few days in

Ms. Ks classroom. At first, I felt as thought the student I was
interviewing was giving me answer I wanted to hear.
However, as I observed the class, the students do truly do
enjoyable work. Every lesson Ive observed in Ms. Ks class
was interactive and fun. Very rarely did they do worksheets
for a long time. Some worksheets are necessary but she
mainly gave them worksheets as morning work
quizzes/activities to be completed during morning work only.
Ms. K teaches math to 2 blocks of students. They typically
first do a brief mini lesson before moving into center work.
Most of the students enjoy science the most. They do
project-based learning and a lot of self-discovery. They
integrate projects into social studies instruction as well. After
learning about different time periods, students had a
Settler project where they had to create a structure from a
time period of their choice and tell who lived there as well as
facts about that time period. The next project they were
going to work on (after spring break) was a lighthouse
project. The students will research one of the 10 lighthouses
in North Carolina, make a model of it and state facts. To
integrate science, they have to make a circuit and have their
lighthouse light up. After hearing all of the fun, but
educational, projects the students do, I knew she wasnt
lying.
The student I interviewed expressed how she learns
best by doing hands on activities. Aside from 15-minute mini
lessons, all the learning is done through hands on activities.
She expressed the traits of a good teacher and a good
learner. They had similar characteristics. She explained how
they have to understand kids. Too many times teachers
dont understand their students and they obviously notice.

Students can tell how much their teachers actually care.

They respond better to a teacher who is genuine and cares.
When she explained what makes a good learner she used
the word persevere. I was impressed with that response.
Some work will be challenging for students, they should and
must persevere in their work.
