Students will attend a school excursion to Kings

Park, a guided walk called Bizarre Botanicals.
Investigating biodiversity and plant adaptations
Discover the features and unique adaptations of some
of Western Australia's most interesting flora. Learn
some of the fascinating ways plants have adapted to
survive in the harsh Australian environment. Consider
the different places plants grow in and investigate the
structure and function plants before exploring the Kings
Park Education gardens to discover native plants and
identify their different adaptations. Investigate desert
plants, plants with built-in sunblock and smelly oils,
carnivorous plants with sticky leaves and unique
bushfire survival mechanisms.
Outcomes
By the end of this program students will:
Understand that plants look, feel and smell very
different because they employ different survival
strategies
Understand some adaptations plants have
made to survive in extreme environments
Understand that Western Australia has an
amazing botanical biodiversity
Begin to develop an understanding of plant
classification.
Australian Curriculum Links
Kings Park Education Programs complement
learning outcomes of the Australian Curriculum.
Students will be placed into groups of 4, each
group will have an iPad. Students will need to
collect photos, videos and information using
Popplet
Students will need to focus on the following key
ideas:
0 What survival strategies do plants use
to survive fire?

What is
biodiversity?

3 Provide specific examples of relative
plant species.
Student groups will create a slide.ly presentation
using the images, video and information
collected.
All groups will then deliver presentations to the
class.
Closure
Students to save mind map as well as slide.ly
presentation to work folders.
Students to complete ICT survey assessment
using Google Forms.
