1. Be respectful of others opinions, space, and personal belongings. -This is a crucial rule that should be implemented in every classroom. Students need to feel welcome and safe in the classroom, and enforcing this rule ensures each student feels like he/she belongs to the group. I want my classroom for special education students to be a safe haven and a place where each of the students can be a part of a cohesive unit that does not pass judgment or invade the space of others. 2. Share your voice. -A classroom for students with special needs should teach and encourage students to express their thoughts and advocate for themselves and each other. I want my classroom to involve collaboration and discussion amongst the students. Students should feel safe to express how they feel about something, or share an opinion about something, and not be afraid of what others think. This will aid them in the general education classroom. 3. Give your best effort at all times. -All students have different ability levels, and its important to encourage each student to work at their own personal effort level. This teaches students to hold themselves accountable for their work, and take pride in what they have accomplished. I want to make a point of telling my students not to compare what they have done to others in the class. If they are working as hard as they can at their personal ability level, they are doing everything asked of them. 4. Encourage your classmates. -Students in a special education room share a unique bond, and its important for me as their teacher to encourage that relationship. I want my students to push each other and praise every accomplishment. In a way I am the coach of my class, and the students are the team. They need to be hard on each other at times, but always show that they have each others backs. 5. Be on time. -Time is an important concept for all students to understand and respect. Time may be understood or used differently by students who learn at different levels, but its important to teach students the importance of being on time. Everything in life revolves
around time and students need to learn how to follow a schedule.
This assists with organizational skills and time management.
