The Lil Toasty Chem

Project
Logan S., E.C S, Sarah H., & Michael C.

Introduction:

What is the purpose of this

project?

Make hand warmers, because . . .

Chemistry is Involved

Raises money for School

People become warm

What are Hand Warmers?

Bags that you crush that become

warm!

Benefits of this project?

WARM ~~

Chemistry Stuff!

Chemistry Involved:

Salts react differently with water

Saw how well or how little the
temperature rises through tests
Exothermic Reaction; releases
energy (Heat)
Displacement Reaction; 2
reactants making 3 different
products

AB + C A + B + C

Testing Process:

Tested 7 different salts using

Glass Cylinder
Hot Plate

Thermometer

Most only reached barely over room

temperature with 50mL of water
Later used less amount of water
and salt; we then found that the
temperatures reached much higher
than before

Thought Process in Project:

Established what materials we would consider for the bags

model

Plastic Bag
Cloth

Figured what salt we wanted to use, which ended up being,

you guessed it, Lithium Chloride!
Temperature rises significantly with small amount of water.
Tested a few models to find the right shape (Rectangle,
Square, etc.)
Thought about the design of the models (SM, Heart, Horse,
etc.)
Money: the amount of money to spend and make profit

Innovations:

Instead of just using just Lithium

Chloride, we added Calcium
Chloride!

Sustains Heat

Penguin Tape

Adds aesthetic appeal

Could be changed to other themes
(mustangs, school or class colors)
Insulates the hand warmer
Plus Penguins are definitely from
warmer climates

Journey to Perfection: Final Design:

Original Prototypes:

Final Prototype:

Only lasted ~ 3 minutes

Double Bag

Singled Bags

Lasts Longer

Leaked a ton

Popped all the time

~ 12 minutes

Penguins

Looked atrocious

Fits in your Hand

Not Toasty

Very Toasty

Duct tape; more durable

Final Product:

Consists of:

5 grams of LiCl

5 grams of CaCl

50 ml of water in a small heat sealed

bag

All in a heat - sealed double bag

covered in duct tape

Samples ! ! !

Some Numbers:

Cost:

LiCl: 7 cents per gram

CaCl: 4 cents per gram
2 cents per plastic bag
Water less than 1 cent per 50 ml
Duct tape 18 cents per foot

Our Final cost will be 78 cents give

or take 5 cents per handwarmer

Price: $1.25 for 1

Reflection:

Established:

The Size of the Bag

The Shape of the Bag
Installation of Heat

Salts to Use
Difficulties:

Stop Bag from leaking

Finding the most efficient design
(Tried many models)

Sometimes got distracted
