Activity: Musical Scattergories
Source: E. B Mika (CTRS of NBMC, 2001), H. R. Porter (Recreation Therapy for Specific
Diagnoses and Conditions, 2015)
Equipment Needed: Paper, pencil
Activity Description:
1. Have participants divide into two teams ( 4 participants per team= 8 in total)
2. Give both teams a topic and time limit.
3. Each team will use teamwork to brainstorm and write down their answers. For example:
Songs titled with a boys name in it (girls, word love, colors, weather words, flowers,
emotion). Team stops writing after time is done.
4. Each team takes turns singing one or two lines from song.
5. The team to sing song are only ones to score points. They must be able to sing song in
order to receive points. The team with the most points wins.
Leadership Considerations:
1. This activity can be done sitting down; no need for movement. For participants with
Substance- related disorder, having a social activity encourages them to cope with stress.
This gives them opportunity to experience self- determination and positive social support.
If they feel depressed or anxious, these mood swings can be eased with an activity
assistant around to help with calming them down.
2. Participants with cancer, will enhance their sense of control, distorted thinking, and
stressful thoughts. As specialists we will reinforce positive behavior. Another adaptation
would be to modify negative thoughts by enhancing self- efficacy and social support.
