Engage:
Questioning Game Think about places in the Lynchburg community
o Where would you go to buy milk? Gas in a car? A taco? Etc.
Im going to show you some pictures of places around Lynchburg that you may have seen
or been to before. So, lets see if you see any place that you have named.

Pull up prezi
Go over pictures
o How does this place help your community?
o (If ethnic place) Do you think the people who work at this place came from a
different country?
Yes, China, Mexico, and Italy
These places make our community more diverse.
Diverse means different, or showing a variety.
Ethnic means cultural, or something that comes from another country.
For example: ethnic restaurants- Chinese, Mexican, Italian
Continue to discuss places in Lynchburg
What are some other places in Lynchburg?
o How does this place help our community?
o Write these places down, or bring them up on a website to show students a
picture of the place.
Closure:
Say, Tomorrow we are going to build a mini Lynchburg community in our class. So, I
want you to be thinking of a place in Lynchburg that you would like to create, and
include, in our community.
H. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO
ABOUT IT?

Students may not know many places in the Lynchburg community.

o The pictures I show them will activate their thinking of places they may go to with
their parents/guardians.
Students may not remember the names of specific places in their Lynchburg community.
o Have students describe the place if they cannot remember what it is called.
Students may not understand the meaning of diversity or ethnicity.
o Try to describe these two words using simple terms that are stated above in the lesson
implementation. Give examples of diversity and ethnicity by showing pictures and
describing the Mexican, Italian, and Chinese restaurants in the Lynchburg
community. Describe how the people who work there came from a different country
of origin (China, Italy, and Mexico).
Students may not know how some places help the community
o Guide the students by explaining how similar places to a place they mentioned, help
the community. Or, provide an example of one way the place helps the community,
and see if the students can come up with another example.
