B. CONTEXT OF LESSON
During this lesson, students will learn about the community of Lynchburg that surrounds Paul
Munro. After creating a place in their Lynchburg community we will set the places up
together in the classroom where it will represent a mini Lynchburg community. Today,
students will each present and share their building that they created. While presenting their
place, each student will share why this place helps our community.

Engage:
Have students set up their community on the rug area.
Implementation:
Tell students they are each going to present their buildings they created.
When students present, tell students to:
o Identify their place, and name of the place.
o Tell how the place helps our community, or why it is important to have in our
community.
o Have you gone to this place? Why?
o Does your particular place bring diversity to the community?
Pick the order of students presenting by pulling Popsicle sticks that each have their name
on it.
Closure:
Review definition of a community
Review Diverse different of showing variety
Review ethnic origin something that comes from another country
Review traditions/customs - a way of doing things, something you practice. Handed
down.
H. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO
ABOUT IT?

Some students may be too shy to present

o Encourage the students and guide the students by making comments or asking
questions about their building. Give the student a compliment about their building to
boost their confidence.

Students may not remember the name of the specific place they built in their Lynchburg
community.
o Have students describe the place if they cannot remember what it is called, and then I
could help them come up with the name of the certain place they are describing.
Students may not understand the meaning of diversity or ethnicity when I ask if their place
makes our community more diverse.
o Try to describe these two words using simple terms that are stated above in the lesson
implementation. Give examples of diversity and ethnicity by describing the Mexican,
Italian, and Chinese restaurants in the Lynchburg community. Describe how the
people who work there came from a different country of origin (China, Italy, and
Mexico).
Students may not know how some places help the community as I ask the students while they
are presenting.
o Guide the students by explaining how similar places to a place they mentioned, help
the community. Or, provide an example of one way the place helps the community,
and see if the students can come up with another example.
