Unit 3 Week 3

We are working on addition and

subtraction within 200. This
week, we are focusing on
adding and subtracting using
the vertical method.

This weeks spelling patterns

are compound words (ex.
weekend, basketball,
someone). Our
comprehension strategy is
compare and contrast.
Comparing and contrasting
to analyze
and evaluate text promotes
a deeper understanding.
When we compare, we
examine similarities among
details within the text, with
another text, or between
our own knowledge and
suppositions.
When we contrast, we
focus on differences.
Applying both methods
together, we can get a full,
well-rounded
understanding of what we
read.

Writing
We will be continuing our
persuasive writing this week.
Persuasive writing is proposing
an idea in order to persuade
the readers opinion. First,
students will state their
opinions. Second, students will
provide reasons. Finally,
students will provide a closing.
We will continue to develop
this skill throughout this week.
Reading at Home:
When you read at home with
your child, invite him or her to
compare or contrast their
previous knowledge with what
they read in the text, or to
argue with the text. One
great way to support this skill
and make it concrete, is to
use a Venn diagram to visually
map the similarities and
differences.
Happy Reading!
Ms. Williams and Mr. Shin

For addition problems, your

child has been instructed to
stack the numbers, making sure
to line up the ones and tens
place correctly. They are then
encouraged to start from the
ones place and add vertically. If
the sum is greater than 9, they
will need to regroup into the
tens place. They continue onto
the tens and hundreds place.
This is the most commonly
known method for addition and
we will continue to work on this
important strategy.

year, I would like to inform you
that I will be updating you with
the newsletter starting this

Spring semester is when the
MSU interns start their guided
lead teaching, which means
that I will have the opportunity
to teach all subjects for a
period of 6-weeks. I am looking
forward to working more
closely with you and all the
students!
Finally, I would like to thank
you all for the support that you
have provided for me, Ms.
Williams, the students, and to
all of Glencairn Elementary.
I am looking forward to this
bright new year and please feel
free to come talk to me about
any questions, comments, or
concerns that you may have!
