Amanda Huff

Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration

Master of Business Administration student
Setting yourself short-term goals can really help with your
postgraduate study, says business administration student
Amanda Huff.
I know I work best if I set myself short-term goals. An MBA
is something I had wanted to pursue for a long time, but that
is quite a big commitment on top of work and family. Being
able to start with the Postgraduate Certificate in Business
Administration was perfect for me.
A new perspective
Postgraduate study has helped to boost her confidence, says
Amanda who balances study with her busy IT career.
Studying has changed me. I think differently now and my
perspective on many aspects of life has changed, and it
happened very quickly.
Im continually inspired by lecturers and appreciate learning
from their vast experience, which is often global.
Support when you need it
Being around like-minded people in class is invaluable,
saysAmanda.
I try to balance being a mum, working full-time and studying.
I manage my time and plan but there are always curveballs,
for example my son inevitably becomes sick when I have a big
assignment due.
08

Its good to be surrounded by classmates who face similar

challenges. We all have different backgrounds but were
all on the same journey and understand what everyone is
goingthrough.
She was amazed by the vast amount of support available to
postgraduate students at AUT.
There is help there if you need it, particularly through the
Student Learning Centre. For example, there is a wide range
of postgraduate workshops you can attend, from personal
branding to academic referencing, Amanda says.
Advice for other students
Her advice to other postgraduate students is to make sure you
celebrate each success.
I make the most of the time I have with my family and we
always make sure we celebrate each small success that way
we all win. Having my partners support definitely helps me
achieve good grades.
Its also very important to make time for fun to balance out all
the hard work.

Gurjeet Singh

Master of Applied Finance student

AUTs strong international reputation is what first attracted
him to the university, says Master of Applied Finance student
Gurjeet Singh.

financial management and accounting strategies to compare

the performance of different companies. This will be very
useful in the workplace, he says.

When I decided to turn my dream of a finance career into

reality, I did a lot of research into where to study. AUT is
ranked highly in the world for accounting and finance in the
QS rankings, so I was sure it would set me up well for my
futurecareer.

Our lecturers have a wealth of practical experience.

Forexample, one of my lecturers used to work for a finance
company in New York, and another is a chartered accountant.
They have worked in the industry themselves, so they know
what employers expect.

Gurjeet, who came to AUT as an international student, says his

passion for finance was sparked when he worked in insurance.

A passion for banking

There is little doubt for Gurjeet what he would like to do when
he graduates next year.

I spent two years working for insurance company BGL Group

in the UK, which made me realise just how important finance is
for so many aspects of business, and life. I decided I wanted a
career in finance, but it soon became apparent that I needed a
postgraduate qualification to work in this field. AUTs Master of
Applied Finance was the perfect solution.
Relevant and practical learning
AUTs practical approach is the highlight of Gurjeets studies.

My dream is to work in investment banking, either in

NewZealand or back in India. I used to work as a customer
services officer for an investment bank, and that experience
really inspired me. It just feels like the right environment for
me to work in.
But whatever comes next, I believe completing this degree will
help me get a good job when I graduate.

The focus is on applying the theory to make financial

decisions. For example, the case studies we cover in class apply

Mike Ward

Area Sales Manager Australasia,

Guardian Industries
Master of Business Administration
When Mike Ward began the AUT MBA programme he was
hoping to achieve personal and professional growth. By the
end of his MBA studies, he had met his wife (a fellow MBA
student), become a father and started his own business.
Now, Mike runs a consultancy firm in the building and
construction industry. Despite being accepted to the MBA
based on ten years management experience, Mike says it was
AUT that gave him the confidence and motivation to start his
own business.
AUT helped me jump several levels of goals in one step.
Iwould not have had this opportunity without the MBA.
Study that fits around your work
Mike chose AUTs MBA programme because he believed it
offered the most flexibility around work commitments and
a more interactive approach to teaching. By the end of his
studies, those qualities were even more highly prized.
One of the greatest challenges for me was making the
commitment to the papers while working full-time and starting
a new business. The programme leaders were understanding
and completely supportive in assisting me with timetable
adjustments and even leave to go overseas.
The industry knowledge of academic staff stood out for me. I
really benefited from the high calibre of the staff and learned
immensely from their practical experience and wisdom.
Essential skills for business leaders
Starting his own business has seen Mike put many of the skills
he gained from the MBA straight into practice.
A significant skill was working with different people and
different nationalities and cultures. It has helped me greatly in
dealing with foreign clients.
