ENGL1020
Elizabeth Kent
I feel like this is a fitting name for the paper because of Domestic violence can tear a family
apart. The point of this essay is about how dangerous domestic violence can be and a lot of
situations will be compared to family issues on the daily basis.
wanted to use a quote as an intro but I am not sure if I can find one. I wanted to start with a
question and that may be what I do, but I am still deciding on what I want to enter with.
I want to involve a quote or something to explain that families dont typically survive a domestic
violence case.
I: Editorial
Usually I hate editorials, but I found a pretty good editorial on what can happen to families in a
domestic violence situation.
II: Report
The report I pulled is a situation where domestic violence took center stage at Americas favorite
stage, the NFL. At the time it happened, uproar from people and fans helped and also hurt a
situation of 2 different players. I chose this because this sparked others to join in.
This newspaper article gives an insight on a case where a woman and her kids are running from
her husband in a violent relationship. This is going to help explain what kind of void that can be
left in a family.
IV: Ad
This ad appeared during Superbowl 50, which is fitting because they were under fire for a while.
This ad helps be show that people in relationships and friendships are affected by this crime.
V: Letter
The letter Ive seen was very insightful on how judges keep sweeping these cases under the rug. I
plan to use it to see how people dont talk about the crime enough.
VI: Interview
This interview I am using is about a woman who was branded while in an abusive relationship
like a prisoner. It show readers what violence can do to a relationship.
VII: Graph
The page of graphs shows the level of domestic violence throughout the years and age groups of
women who get hurt. I can use this to show the percentages to the reader.
Cook, Lindsey. "Domestic Violence Is as American as Apple Pie." US News. U.S.News &
World Report, 25 Sept. 2014. Web. 27 Mar. 2016.
The article/blog I have chosen talks about how Domestic violence has been a part of America
for a long time. It seems as if the rate of the crime has risen to normality and is usually stated as
pushing and slapping. But the blog also states that stalking is a huge pathway leading to abusive
crimes. One of my points of emphasis involves how people get in the situation of domestic
violence. This supports the point hugely.
"Domestic Violence Victim: "I Was a Prisoner in My Own Home"" CBSNews. CBS
Interactive, 17 Mar. 2013. Web. 27 Mar. 2016.
The interview I have chosen starts off with the words "I Was a Prisoner in My Own Home".
This seems fitting for the topic and for one of the points I am trying to prove. This statement
comes from a woman who expressed to CBS News that she has been in a deeply abusive
relationship. It seems almost slave like. The woman speaks of what she was allowed or not
allowed to do. The story told was aired nationally. This helps me explain how famalies suffer
from this crime.
Former Deputy to Mayor Bloomberg; Seeks to Help End Domestic Violence. By:
Bermudez, Caroline, Chronicle of Philanthropy, 1040676X, 10/9/2014, Vol. 26, Issue 19
This magazine article by Caroline Bermudez discusses how New York goes up against domestic
violence and child abuse. The increase of domestic violence was huge in New York was huge at
this time and was about to be the highest ever seen in New York. A lot of the domestic issues
were to younger people in relationships. The article describes that the charity placed for children
served at least forty-five thousand people to help rehab domestic violence victims.
Harvard Law Review. May2015, Vol. 128 Issue 7, p2090-2097. 8p.
Now here is an article I was looking for. This is a domestic violence court case involving a
mother and her three children against the husband/father. Because of death threats given by the
husband, authorities refuse to get involved and help this lady. The hardest part of the situation is
that the lady is from Guatemala where this case was often overlooked. The woman was trying to
go to a social group asylum to see what could be done but there was little to no help because
once again, Guatemala was known for violence within the family.
NFL domestic violence program shifts focus By: Lindsay H. Jones, @bylindsayhjones, USA
TODAY Sports, USA Today, 07347456, JUL 28, 2015
In this article, the author Lindsay Jones focuses the subject to the NFL strengthening their
policies towards domestic violence. The teams gather to discuss domestic violence, sexual
assault, and child abuse. In this USA Today article, Jones doesnt talk much from an
opinionative standpoint but rather what the people interviewed had to say about the subject. The
NFLs decision was supposed to call out the subject of domestic violence after recent issues
during the offseason. This newspaper article shows the organizations and big businesses were
helping to standup against domestic violence. The article was perfect for that reason.
Osofsky, Joy. Developing Strategies to Deal with Trauma in Children. 2005, Vol. 1 Issue
1, p77-88. 12p.
This section of the book talks about how children are traumatized as a result of domestic
violence. It gives an insight on how the system is making moves to help better the victims or
witnesses who have experienced violence at this level. This is to keep children from being
traumatized over the events that take place. This helps me from an aspect of what crowd or
certain people go through the struggle of domestic violence. I am looking for another source to
help this one as I search for a chart to back up my grouping of people who mostly experience
this. It hurts because I cant find any more information regarding to the facts of what signs can
tell who will commit that type of crime.
the party. The girl responds by saying her boyfriend is in one of his violent moods and the
commercial ends with her not responding to the text. This is fitting seeing that the NFL was
supporting this commercial because the same company created a similar type commercial in
2014 after the unfortunate Ray Rice situation. Even though the situations were different and
unfair, once the Greg Hardy story broke the NFL cracked down on domestic violence cases.
Sw Times. "Domestic Violence Needs Our Attention." Editorial. Http://swtimes.com/.
GateHouse Media, 19 Oct. 2014. Web. 27 Mar. 2016.
This is an online editorial. It talks about the fact that domestic violence is majorly overlooked.
The writer talks about the numbers and how many times they get calls on domestic violence
hotlines (which by the way is 20,000). The writer also points out that domestic violence goes
both ways by using the example of a girlfriend picking up a knife and acting crazy to get her
way. The writer keeps reinforcing the point that this crime cannot be overlooked anymore in the
neighborhoods and even cities.
In conclusion, I plan to keep my paper as simple and as direct as possible. I want to focus on
what leads to domestic violence. I also want to show what happens when people sweep it under
the rug and talks about the crime when its too late. This paper is going to prove the dark evil
that is overlooked like some sort of sideshow. These sources are going to show real life
situations get snubbed due to the awful system that we have.
