Have them form a triangle and some squares
and facing their hips and shoulders to their
target. Have them release high and follow
through. The focus should be on the release
and arm high. This will drastically improve their
throw but also will help with injuries. After about
5-7 minutes have them stand and continue the
same drill but standing up. The emphasis is the
arm but also make sure theyre stepping with
opposition.

Learning
Objective
Addressed

Intro
After students sit down and are quiet ask them
how throwing went. If students are talking wait
for silence. Then lead into the introduction to
hiking. Show proper form for a hike yourself and
explain that it is a between the legs hand off or
a pass backwards. Also explain that they need
to be in an athletic stance. (knees bent, low, and
ready) Explain when a hike occurs. (to begin a
play) To check for understanding ask what a
good hike needs to have. (to their hands, High
enough to catch, not a lot of spin, etc.)
Activity
Students will remain in their groups of 3 and will
have one partner hike/handoff to the QB who
will then throw to the receiver. They still rotate
after each and continue practicing the
mechanics of throwing, hiking, and catching
until the period is over. Have students call the
names of people theyre throwing too. Also for
students who are more proficient have them
design simple routes and begin to form plays
with a hike and a throw to a receiver.
