    GranTelescopioCanarias(GTC),thelargestopticaltelescopeintheworld,witha
    mirrorthathasadiameterof10.4metres(34.1feet).ItislocatedattheRoquedelos
    MuchachosObservatoryonLaPalma(2,326metres[7,631feet])intheCanaryIslands
    ofSpain.Themirrorconsistsof36hexagonalpieces,whichcanbemovedseparately
    fromeachother,andtheshapeofeachpiececanbechanged.Thesetwotypesof
    movementscancompensateforthechangesintheobservedlightthatarecaused
    byturbulenceinEarthsatmosphere.Thetelescopeismountedinasystemthatmoves
    bothinaltitudeandinazimuthtoobserveanypointinthesky.ConstructionoftheGTC
    beganin2000itmadeitsfirstobservationin2007.TheGTCisoperatedbya
    consortiumoffourinstitutions:theInstituteofAstrophysicsoftheCanaryIslands,
    theNationalAutonomousUniversityofMexico,theNationalInstituteofAstrophysics,
    Optics,andElectronicsofMexico,andtheUniversityofFlorida.
