Professional School Counselor Portfolio (PSCP)

Brief Reflection Form

Standard 6: Assessment & Evaluation
Competencies Addressed: 4, 5
Date Created: 2016
Student Name: Bailey Hackathorn

Reviewers Initials: _____________

1. The artifacts displayed under Standard 6 were collected as an assignment in GEDU 527
Developmental Assessment and Guidance Curriculum in the Schools. This could fit within the
RS/SS sections of the National Model.
Competencies addressed:
4: Apply evaluation procedures for monitoring student achievement.
5: Apply assessment information in program design and program modifications to address
students needs.

2. What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies which
fall under this standard?
I believe that the artifacts shown here demonstrate that I learned how to monitor student
achievement, at the elementary level specifically, as well as how to assess and address students
needs at this level. In terms of competency 6:4, the counselor should look at students grades,
attendance records, proficiency scores, and benchmark scores to monitor achievement. By
looking at these items, it can show students areas of strengths and weaknesses in terms of
specific subjects, or in terms of attendance itself.
With competency 6:5, assessing and addressing students needs may be different based upon the
level of students (ex: elementary, middle school, high school). With the artifacts shown here, the
program used separate assessments for grades K-1 than grades 2-3. K-1 can use smiley faces to
assess feelings whereas 2-3 can rate on a gradual scale. This is a good example of program
modifications and program design in order to best serve student needs.

3. What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your growth as a professional school counselor?
I believe that these items show that I can modify student assessment based on appropriate level
in order to best serve their individual needs. Likewise, it shows that as a counselor, I know what
items to track and assess so that students are not left behind in a certain subject area or with
school attendance/behavior. Proper referrals can be used as necessary based on assessments.

4. What are your plans for additional growth or improvement in this area?
To grow and improve in this area, I would like to seek out/create more assessment/evaluation
tools for both individuals and groups. I believe that this is critical to do at any level. Likewise, I
would like to work more with the administration of standardized tests. While I gained personal
experience doing this at the secondary level through my internship, I would like to experience it
at the lower levels, too. The same can go for scoring and measuring of tests.
Lastly, I think it is of utmost importance to remember potential legal and ethical issues related to
assessments and student records. While this was not addressed in the artifacts shown, it should be
a routine practice.
