Activities and Procedures:
Anticipatory Set:
I will play a song about elephants on my iPad
I will do the movements the first time
The second time, the children will join in with the movements and say as many words in the song as they can
Words to the song:
An elephant goes like this and that
Hes terribly big and terribly fat
He has no fingers and has no toes
But goodness gracious,
What a long nose!
Hey dee, hey dee ho,
The great big elephant is so slow
Hey dee, hey dee ho,
The elephant is so slow
He swings his trunk from side to side
As he takes the children for a ride
Hey dee, hey dee ho,
The elephant is so slow

Lesson Sequence:
After the song, I will start to read the book Elmer
As I read the story to the children, I will ask the children questions about the story for them to answer to make sure
they are listening.
I will then tell the children about our activity.
Each child will get an elephant cut out. Each child will also get a baggie of puzzle pieces made out of
construction paper. The children will then have to figure out where each puzzle piece goes on the elephant and
glue their pieces on the elephant.
The children will then be broken into their groups and go to the tables to do their activity. Before the children start the
activity, they will write their names on the back of their elephants. (Name cards will be provided to those children who
cannot write their names.)
The children will complete the activity and then place their elephants in their cubbies.
Closure:
After the children complete their elephant puzzle, the children will gather back into the circle and as a group will
discuss what they learned from the book.
The children will talk about why everyone is different and why it is ok to be different.
Assignments:
None.
