Instructional Objectives:
Students will:
Knowledge:
Understand why rules and variations are essential components when playing a game with
others.
Skills:
Participate in warm up activities and games in a fair, cooperative, and safe manner.

Lesson Procedure:
Warm-Up:
1 lap jogging around the gym
10 jumping jacks
Wall-sit for 10 seconds
REPEAT this time 10 JJs and plank for 10 seconds
Mice in a Corner
Class is divided into 4 groups and one person is it. Each group is given a corner
(the safe area.) The cat (it) will say Mice in the corner. Players must run to
another corner without being tagged by the it. All players that do get tagged will
also be it.
VARIATIONS: Add in a treasure (beanbag) that the cat is guarding in the middle
of the playing area. If a mouse can capture the treasure while he or she is running,
then one it the last one tagged must return to being a mouse. **Set up 5 hoops
for mice and cats to store treasure in.
Blob Tag

Choose one or two students to be the Blob. They must try to tag other students
with their two free hands. If tagged, a student must join hands with the Blob,
becoming part of the Blob. Some rules apply:
1. Only the end players of the BLOB can tag others.
2. The BLOB must remain connected to tag others.
**Make a rule that you cannot go under or over the Blob. If you touch the Blob,
you become part of the Blob.

Warm-Up Tag
Divide the class into two equal groups. One team will be the taggers, and the
other team will be the evaders. The taggers will have possession of the ball.
The object of the game is to see how long it takes for the "taggers to eliminate all
of the opposing players by hitting them below the shoulders with the ball. To
begin, the taggers will start at one end of the gym, and the evaders will begin at
the opposing end. On the signal to begin, the taggers will begin to scatter about
and start eliminating the evading team by hitting them below the shoulders, with
the ball. Players that are hit are eliminated from the game and must sit out
(Perform designated exercise) until the end of the round. I will time how long it
takes for the taggers to get all of the evaders, and then players will switch roles.
Rules to play:
1. Players may not move if their feet if they have a ball. They have 2 choices,
throw at a close opponent or pass to a teammate who think they will have a
better shot.
2. Hits must be made below the shoulders.
3. 5 second holding rule.
**Variation: Use two balls and designate 1 for girls only and one for boys only.
Capture the gold Outdoors
Set-up: Cones (to mark territory), hoops, gold, jail space/hoops
Snap Crackle and Pop!
Game is played around the circle in the center of the gym. Group students into
groups of three. Students will sit in lines with their groups. I will call out one of
either snap crackle or pop and the team members who are that name will
stand up, run clockwise around the circle, through the middle of the other two
partners, and try to grab the gold at the center of the circle. There will be one team
out each time.
Tunnel races
Split class into two teams (11 per team). They will stand behind one another
behind a line at one end of the gym. The goal is to make it to the other end (finish
line) before the other team. The student at the back of their teams line will crawl
through the legs of all of the students in front of them, until they make it to the
front of the line. Once there, they will call out, team name and the next person
will crawl through the tunnel.

Rock Paper Scissors tag

Divide students into two teams, each at different ends of the gym. Teams will
discuss with their teammates whether they are rock, paper or scissors. They will
then meet at a center line, lining up facing the other team, and will play rock
paper scissors. The winning team will chase the losing team to the wall of their
side of the gym, tagging whoever they can. If tagged, students must change teams.
Assessment:
Observation Observe as students participate in physical activity. Ensure that warm-up
exercises are being done properly. Look for team-work during games and activities.
Lesson Reflection:
Monday 13th:
PE class was a success today for the most part this is the lesson I have been worried
about teaching. Teaching in a gym is very different from teaching in the classroom. I
chose a warm-up leader for both the warm-up and cool-down a girl and a boy. This
seemed to work nicely. We played The BLOB tag which the kids seemed to love. To
make it a little fairer, I made a boys BLOB and a girls BLOB I changed up the
students who were the Blob to keep everyone challenged and running. There was a lot of
talking near the beginning of class. However, I was firm and made sure the kids knew
that we would not be playing anything if we cant listen properly.
Tuesday 14th:
I was really happy with how todays class went. We started off with the human bridge
game, where students would crawl underneath the legs of all of their teammates, and race
to the finish line. They really enjoyed this. It got very noisy/competitive, which I maybe
could have dealt with (stopped the game and spoke to them), but it was not bothering me
and showed me that the students were working as a team and having fun. We then played
capture the gold I really like this game and I think the students had a lot of fun.
Management is more of a challenge in the gym. My TA has told me that, although the
gym is not a classroom, it should work the same way, and the same rules should be in
place/same level of respect should be shown. I will choose more music to add to playlist
for tomorrows class.
Wednesday 15th:
Today we played Bowling Pin Dodgeball. The kids had not played this variation of
dodgeball before, although they are very familiar with the regular game of dodgeball. I
kept many of the rules the same, and just added the new goal of getting the other pins
down. I changed up some of the boys (switched their teams) as I thought this would make
it more fair. I tried to be more firm with the rules/asking for a jail break today, and the
students got to know that I was in charge of the game. After the game, when I wanted
students to clear up and stop playing, there was still a lot of throwing balls and running
around. I need to talk to them about that next week (before next gym class) and make
sure that they know to freeze when I say game over. Maybe using a whistle would help

with this. Overall, a good PE class outcomes were being met and lots of physical
activity was going on.
