DBQ 15

Nationalism played many prominent roles in the 18-19th centuries. It not only brought
about many world changing conflicts but also helped the people of the world for the good.
Although nationalism is a fairly broad thing you can break it down into three parts based
on what happened involving nationalism in the 18th-19th centuries. These groups are the
separation of people by ethnic background or age and gender, creating armed conflicts
such as war and rebellion, and the unification of people in the large empires.
The first group you can break nationalism into is the separation of the people. In
document 1 it says that the young man shall fight, the married or mid aged men shall transport
food and supplies. The women will do the sowing of tents, uniforms, and will help care for the
soldiers in the hospitals. The elder men will help encourage the young to fight. This is a great
example of the separation of people into different groups based on gender and age. In document
#6 a assassin talks about himself as a Yugoslavian and his duty was to free the Yugoslavs of
Serbia. In this document it talks about the freedom of one ethnic group. This is also a very prime
example of the separation of people. In document #7 there is an illustration that shows many
different resulting countries from nationalism of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It helps show that
based on ethnic background the empire split. Each ethnic background made their own country
after separating themselves from the empire.
The next section of nationalism is the conflict or wars it was responsible for. Nationalism
encouraged war and uprising of the people. In document #2 the French anthem urged the French
to rise up against their king. This is a form of nationalism to the fact that this anthem helped the
men and women in France make the choice to fight against the king and bring about their own
independence. In document #5 otto von Bismarck spoke to what is now Germany about how
blood and steel was the only way to gain freedom from the Prussian empire. This is entirely a
speech about war. In these two cases nationalism inspired wars to become free and take their
own country.
The third and final section that we can separate nationalism into is the unification of the
people. This was probably the most important part because the first two sections can be
considered sub sections to this one. Unification of the people was the only way you could really
get a movement of a group. In document #3 the man speaking is speaking to unite the young
soldiers of Italy to help them rebel against the empire that ruled them. This is a prime example of
nationalism causing people to unite to bring about a common goal. In document #4 it talks
about forcing out people from other countries to unite the Italian country. This was very
important in Italy.
