Theabovediagramshowsablockmodelofafoldwithtop,sideandendviews(thetraditionalcross
section).Wecanseethatboththetraditionalcrosssectionandthemapviewareobliquetotheaxisofthe
fold.Bothareactuallyobliquecrosssections.Iftheplungewere45degrees,bothviewswouldlookthe
same.Whentheplungeislessthan45degrees,thecrosssectionprovidesthetruerview.Whentheplunge
isgreaterthan45degrees,however,themapviewisclosertothetrueshapeofthefold.

Therearetwoverynicefeaturesofdownplungeprofiles:
Incontrasttocrosssections,everypointontheprofileviewisderivedfromdatathemapview.Wedo
notinterpolatefoldshapesorextrapolatedips.Wedoassumethefoldhasconstantplungeoverthearea
beingprofiled.Thusprofileviewsshowmoredetailandarebettersupportedthancrosssections.
Topographiceffectsthatcomplicatemapviews(left)disappearindownplungeprofileviews(right).The
linesthatgeneratethefoldshapemayintersectthetopographyincomplexwaysbutallweseewhenwe
lookdowntheplungeofthefoldistheshapeofthefold.

However,topographycan
complicatematters.Thepoint
inredat(x,y,z)wouldprojectat
adifferentpointontheprofile
planethanwouldapointat
(x,y,0).
Thediagramatleftshowsthe
coordinateswewillusein
developingformulasfordown
plungeprofiling.
Obviously,x=x'.Distancesat
rightanglestothetrendofthe
foldprojecttrue.

Herewedevelopaformulafortakingtopographyintoaccount.Wecanseethat:
Whentopographyissmallcomparedtothemapscale,itbecomesinsignificant
Whenplungeissteep,mapcoordinatesdominate
Whenplungeisshallow,topographycandominate.Intheextremecasep=0,wecouldlookatavertical
cliffandseeatrueprofile,whereasthegeologywouldbeallbutinvisibleonamap.
Obviously,y'=ysinp+zcosp.Thus,thecoordinatesof(x,y,z)intheprofileplaneare:
x'=x
y'=ysinp+zcosp

Therearetwowaystoproceedfromhere.Theformulasareeasilycomputerized.Weneedtwofiles:one
withthegeologyofthemapareaandonewithtopography.Usingthetopographyfile,wefindcoordinates
(x,y,z).Werefertothegeologyfiletofindtherockunitat(x,y),thenprojectthatdatato(x',y').
Ifwealreadyhavedatafiles,thecomputerapproachiseasy.Foraverylargeorcomplexprojectitmaypay
togeneratethefiles.Butforarelativelysmallandsimplestructureitmaystillbefastertouseagraphical
approach.
