Key Content Area Skills: counting marbles to add simple addition problems
Integrated Content Focus: Physical Development: Fine motor/small muscle
Integrated Content Area Concepts: fine motor skills by dropping the marbles
into tubes
Integrated Content Area Skills: grab marbles (fine motor) and place them in the
tubes
Learning Outcomes:
The children will be able to add simple addition problems.
SC ELS: M-3K-2.4: understand the concept of adding one more (joining) and
taking away (separating).
SC ELS: M-4K-2.4: represent simple joining and separating situations through 4.
Materials to collect/prepare: adding machine tub, book The Mission of Addition
by Brian P. Cleary, marbles to count
Transition/warm up/introduction: read book The Mission of Addition by Brian P.
Cleary
Adult Procedures:
The adult will
1. Introduce what it means to add numbers/items to get a bigger number
2. Show the children the first addition problem
3. Ask the children to help solve the problem with adult
4. Have one child place marbles into each tube
5. Ask the children, How many marbles do we have all together?
6. Work through problem if stuck
7. Write the number answer and include dots to show what that number is
8. Show children the next card
9. Have the children drop the right amount of marbles in each tube
10. Ask the children, How many marbles do we have all together?
11. Go through cards with children
12. Have children help clean up
13. Thank the children

Child Procedures:
The children will
1. Listen to adult while talking about adding numbers
2. Place marble in each tube when asked
3. Respond by saying how many marbles there are
4. Write answer and the dots representing that number
5. Go through next card
6. Place marbles and give answer
7. Write answer and dots representing that number
8. Work with adult going through all problems
9. Respond to adult when finding out the answer
10. Help adult clean up
Conversation to Support Learning/Talking with Children:
How many marbles do we have?
How many marbles should go in each tube?
How many dots should I put with this number?
When should we place the marbles in each tube?

Observations and Assessment:


Children are able to solve the problem, children are counting in correct order,
children are engaged asking questions, children are placing marbles in the tubes to
solve problems
Accommodations for individuals:
Simplification for atypical learners: simpler addition problems
Challenge for advanced learners: include cards without the dots, have
more complex problems
