Nonverbal Communication
Lips and tongues lie. But actions never do. No matter what words are spoken, actions
betray the truth of everyone's heart(Kenyon, 2014). Humankind over the years has recognized,
through several studies, that nonverbal communication weights more than verbal
communication. Every detail that we transmit through nonverbal communication can greatly
affect the message that we transmit more explicitly through verbal communication. Nonverbal
communication is not something that one is only born with but something that is developed
through experience and instruction also. So, how would mastery in nonverbal communication
affect ones life? To be a better communicator, it is my goal to understand the nonverbal
communication that others and I transmit.
Nonverbal communication can increase ones ability to succeed in any aspect of life.

Most people who are skillful at communicating their emotions nonverbally are usually those who
are popular, confident and smart. In nonverbal communication one is able to communicate
passion more strongly, place emphasis in a topic of great or less importance and connect with
others. Therefore, by showing expertise in communicating nonverbally one can create such an
image which attracts and leads to opportunities. An employer will most likely pick someone who
is highly skilled at nonverbal communication over someone that is not as capable on it.
For example, it was noted in a recent study that there is no boring or difficult subject but
rather teachers who do not know how to convey information(Samfira, 2014). Teachers who are
proficient at teaching verbally and nonverbally help the student learn better, create an
environment of openness and create lasting impressions. In Guatemala, my family owns a private

Nonverbal Communication

school, over the years I have noticed that those who are better communicators tend to stay longer
at their jobs because of their engaging skills. Also, in my years as a student, it is evident that
teachers who are skillful at nonverbal communication leave a lasting impression, for one is able
to perceive intentions and care more easily. Teachers have lead me to understand that by caring
enough to evaluate ones self while communicating can lead to results that one could not even
imagine.
By applying the principle of improving nonverbal communication it is my goal leave
such impressions on my relationship with family, friends and others. It is easy to not care about
the way one communicates with others. This leads to people to believe that you are not honest
with your feelings. In recent journals I have written that may times that people are not as open
with me because they feel that I dont care enough. I have noticed that part of that is because that
although I may communicate effectively verbally my nonverbal communication may indicate
disinterest or lack of emotion. With self awareness and more understanding of the many
emotions that are transmitted by body movements, tone of voice, physical space and etc. It is a
fact that my relationship with others will grow stronger.
To better apply the principle of transmitting messages effectively through nonverbal
communication there are several actions that are to be implemented. First, get deeper
understanding of the several types of nonverbal communication. Second, be more more aware of
how people in positions of authority use nonverbal communication. Third, be more self aware of
and ask for feedback regarding nonverbal communication.
How am I going to apply the principles of nonverbal communication in a work setting? It
is my plan to do summer sales this year with DishOne. Recently I was invited to go on a trip to
Brigham City to get a feel of how the environment of sales is and train. While in Brigham City, I

Nonverbal Communication

shadowed which means accompanying a sales representative to observe how the process of
selling is. I was with a regional representative. The way the regional representative
communicated was amazing, for he knew how to communicate nonverbally effectively. Through
his body movement tone of voice he transmitted the idea that he was harmless, friendly and
caring. This lead a costumer to listen and open himself/herself. It is expected for me to have the
same skills when I go out to sell with DishOne. In order to bring outstaying results on the
summer I will have to be able to engage people in a friendly way so that they may open
themselves up to me.
Currently Im also working at the National Association for Family Child Care. Im a
member services specialist. Im planning on suing the knowledge that I have acquire of
nonverbal communication to get along better with my coworkers. I also have notice that by
changing my tone of voice to one of care in the workplace people are more receptive and willing
to listen to what I have to say. The communication is more clear and I get positivism even from
the person that is most reluctant to talk over the phone.
As it is shown nonverbal communication will play an important part in the success of any
endeavor. With balance of verbal and nonverbal communication one will get the full of potential
of any relationship, professional career or any other aspect of life. For one will be able to
communicate exactly what one is feeling. It is not easy to be able to be constantly self aware of
ones self, specially when there may be pressure in the workplace of other settings, but though it
will be difficult at first it will eventually become a habit that will influence greatly ones destiny.
