Brochure

Description: A trifold brochure promoting a bike tour in Washington D.C. Programs Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop Date: March 26, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.

Process: I did a trifold so that the brochure would resemble a map. My logo was a bike, that says “DC” on the tires, and I used that image of the bike throughout the design to create unity. I created the design in Illustrator using the curve and pen tools. I used text wrapping with my image of a helmet. I edited the helmet image in Photoshop to get rid of unwanted parts of the image and the white background using the selection tool. I then placed the image in InDesign. I used paragraph styling with my headlines and text to have continuity throughout my whole design.

logos

Description: Logo for a bakery. Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator Date: Febuary 21, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.

Process: This project was so fun to do! I took a vote and most people liked this one because they said the “B” was memorable. I didn’t like the look of having a word inside of the bread, especially since it was one of the main words. I decided to take out the word “bread” so the design could look more sleek. I then played around with the sizes of the bread, and manipulated the corners of the last design which was a fill in of surrounding white text.

Event ad

Description: A full-bleed event ad to promote an air event using only Microsoft Word. Programs Used: Microsoft Word Date: January 31, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together). Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process: I scanned the photo of the airplane from a magazine. I put my title text with a gradual flow toward that center of focus that drew attention to the airplane wings and strong visual elements. I added the purple tinted translucent boxes that helped with

the ad’s gestalt by giving it a cloud-like look, contributing to the flyer’s airplane theme. I

Letterhead

Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo. Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign Date: February 28, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.

Process: After sketching my design, I created my logo in Adobe Illustrator using the pen, shape, and line tools. I added polka dots to create a fun pattern, to show the playfulness of her books. I added her contact information to the bottom to make it look cleaner and more organized. Once I finalized my design, I placed the .ai file into Adobe InDesign.

business card

Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo. Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign Date: February 28, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.

Process: I picked a gray background to go with my background, giving a good contrast to every element of the logo. For the other side of the business card, I

maintained a lot of the same information from the letterhead. I added the logo of the book, but eliminated the text, to show the book from a new perspective, and

montage

Description: A spiritually themed montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography. Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop Date: February 13, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.

Process: I first added the forest photo, and the with the layer tools I erased the women’s figure, and then placed it on the forest photo. I wanted to find a way to hide the outline of her feet to make it more natural, so I added in the smoke. I then played with the opacity levels to make the smokey fog the way I liked. I then added the scriptures over my image and then lowered the opacity of the image to 5%. I then inserted a quote from Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Flier

Description: Graduate Leadership Conference Flier in Black and White. Programs Used: Adobe Indesign Date: January 23, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Process: After sketching a few designs, I used this one because it incorporated the best alignment with the black blocking “L” to tie all the elements together. Using Adobe InDesign, I contributed to the proximity by grouping the visual elements together (logo, image, and QR code), which led the design through a logical flow. From an advertising standpoint, I decided to incorporate a QR code which will help more people actually visit the mobile site and register for the event. The logo, image, and text was provided for me.

Description: A website designed to show the logo I created. Programs Used: I used Adobe lllustrator to create the logo, and Notepad ++ to design the html and CSS. Date: March 12, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags – Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog). Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, font families and add at least one css comment. Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

Process: I started by working on my html last week. This was difficult as I had to learn how to space things. It was also difficult to learn how to indent properly. Then, I learned how to use CSS. Then, it was trial and error on seeing if the code had a desired look.

imaging

Description: Incorporating a color scheme into a good photograph to display my skills in Adobe Photoshop. Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop Date: February 6, 2016 Course: COMM 130: 02 Instructor name: Ben Pingel

Objective: Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5 x 11 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process: I first looked in the Visual FOCUS textbook and chose a triadic color scheme. I went around my apartment finding things that seemed to fit my color scheme. I then decided my audience would be for children and was inspired by the story of the Ugly Duckling. I had my roommates help me hold a few lamps, and I used my Samsung NX2000 camera to shoot the photo. I then brought the photo into Photoshop and used these specific editing techniques: levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. I used the eye dropper tool to make my blue a more teal color, and then I smoothed it out with the brush.
