Unit 4- Number Theory and Fractions

Lesson Topic/
Description

Learning Target:

Prime Factorization

Standards

Students will master this concept in preparation

for standard:
CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.4 -Find the greatest
common factor of two whole numbers less than
or equal to 100 and the least common multiple
of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12.

SWBAT use one of two methods to break a composite down into a product of prime numbers.

Notes:
Each station is designed to last for 15-20 minutes. Students complete two stations on Day 1 and their last station on Day 2
Each class is heterogeneously grouped. There are 16-20 students of varying abilities in each class.
Small groups determined by me are mostly homogenous and determined based on the pre-test students took before the unit began
and on formative assessments completed in class during the unit up until this point. Grouping changes every unit, or sometimes
twice per unit based on student performance.

Review (5
minutes or less):
Using white
boards, students
will identify
numbers written
on the board as
either prime or
composite. They
will also be asked
to provide
examples or prime
vs. composite
numbers.

Remediation Group (Those who struggled

previously with identifying prime vs.
composite):
I.
Use interactive notebooks to review
prime vs. composite numbers. Complete
a few more of the types of problems
given during the opening review. Help
individual students until everyone is on
the same page.
II.
Complete foldable notes for prime
factorization using 2 methods: division
by primes and factor trees.
III.
Use white boards to complete 2-5
practice problems together as a group.
IV.
If time permits, allow students to begin
homework so that they can ask for help if
needed.

Explain (5
minutes):

with the concept of greatest common factor)

Middle Group (Those who did well with the
previous lesson on prime numbers, but are not
yet familiar with the concept of GCF)

Complete parts II-IV from above

Choice of:

Completing the Khan

Academy practice from any
concepts outlined on the
Khan Academy Playlist
created by Mrs. Minera for
Chapter 4 that have already
been covered in class.
Moving forward through the
playlist to something that has
not yet been covered in class
if student feels comfortable
with all previously covered
concepts.
Working through chosen
accelerated mission on Khan
Academy if you have already
begun one approved by Mrs.
Minera.

Complete task cards

reviewing Order of
Operations with exponents
with a partner or
independently. Cards are
differentiated- student should
choose based on how they feel
about the concept based on
previous practice.
