PROCEDURE
Introduction (2-3 min.):
ASK: Who can point out where Lethbridge is on the map?
We live in an area of Southern Alberta that is very unique. Our city is called Lethbridge, but we actually live
on Treaty 7 land. This is the land that the First Nations people of Alberta traditionally used to live on many
many years ago. Today we share the land with everyone, but recognize that First Nations people were the first
individuals to call this area their home.
Today I want to see where everyone has been in Alberta and see how many of you have travelled to different
places in our province.

Body (20-25min.):
Learning Activity #1: Mapping
Assessments/Differentiation:

Each student will be given a map of Alberta. Students will use a small Canada flag sticker to label where
they live (Lethbridge).
As a class we will discuss the different places we have been, and use the smartboard to label these areas. If
students mention an area where not many people have been, we will look it up on the internet. If more than
one person has been there, students can label it on their map.
Students will use a pencil to mark the other places they have been and where they may want to go. Each child
will get to share a place.
o When labeling, we need to make our dots neat and somewhat small so that we have room to write
and label other places. Students will need to write small on their maps if they want to write the
name of the places they have visited. Lethbridge needs to be labeled and spelt correctly.
o Students can try their best to label their map. If the dot is slightly off it is okay, but Lethbridge
should be correctly labeled. (A teacher will go around and give the student a sticker to mark
Lethbridge.)
Remind: remember to remind the students to be respectful when others are sharing. Remind them that
it is the same as having the talking rock and that when others have the power to talk, they have the
power to listen.
After everyone has shared, students can look at their maps and compare them with their peers.
These pages will be cut out and put into their social studies books.
If there is time, students can work on their maps and finish cutting/coloring the pages. Other students can find a
quiet center or read silently.
