Number sense refers to a general understanding of

number and operations as well as the ability to apply
this understanding in flexible ways to make
mathematical judgements and to develop useful
strategies for solving problems.

This curriculum can be used as a

continuum to look at the mathematical
thinking of children to help teacher
accommodate and modify students who
may be above or below grade level
expectations. Current grade level
expectations are a great jumping off point
for setting up diagnostic assessments, but
using the grade level below or above can
also help guide current student practice
and teacher instruction. Good
differentiated instruction works on
individual continuums of groups of children
or individual children.
