BROCHURE | Systems Thinking Network

We think that a transformational revolution

is needed in health education, research, and
practice. We hope that youll join us.

WHAT IS SYSTEMS THINKING, ANYWAY?

Systems thinking, as applied to health is a way of thinking about and transforming the way we practice health.
Different organizations and people have slight variation s
of the definition of systems thinking. This is the way that
we view it:
Systems thinking is a perspective and set of tools that
helps us to optimize interactions over time, across disciplines and professions, in order to achieve health goals
that we as a society want long term.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
In practice, this means that we think about the economic, social, and political needs of the people to which were
treating along with their biological needs. The current
and past medical model generally tried to improve one
aspect of these basic needs of health at a time. By treating
health in this way, we can see obvious success such as
the eradication of smallpox. Health, in reality, has many
contributing factors, and our approach often starts a chain
reaction of consequences we never intended because of
the complex system in which health lies. By thinking of all
factors as a whole, we can help to eliminate said unintended consequences. Systems thinking is doing just that, and
its potential is world-changing.

Looking at the
transformation of
health through the
lenses of Systems
Thinking
WHO ARE WE?
We are a group of students dedicated to a systems thinking revolution! We believe that a paradigm shift is greatly needed in society,
and we are working to make that happen. Our vision is to create a
world where interactions between communities, professions, disciplines, networks, etc. are optimized over time to improve health and
wellness.
We believe in a revolution on the basis that health care should be
viewed from a systems thinking perspective. We believe that this
shift in view is a necessity in our current society, and we are working towards that goal. We want to create a world where the connections between communities, professions, disciplines, networks, etc.
are made more efficient over time to increase the status of health
around the world.

BROCHURE | Systems Thinking Network Pt. 2

Description
This is a project for my Visual
Communications class. It is a brochure for
a network of students dedicated to raising
awareness about systems thinking as
applied to health care.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills)

I created this design using Adobe Illustrator
and InDesign. I wrote text for the brochure
and gathered images. Then, I organized and
refined my design. I used paragraph styles
to control the attributes of the text. When it
was ready to print, I did a test print to see if
it had folded properly. The final print was 11
by 17 and trimmed down to a full bleed 8.5
by 11.

Message
The message is meant to be a call to action
and a description as to what Systems
Thinking Network is and what they believe
in. It needed to convey the idea that the
group knows what they are talking about.

Audience
The audience would be people of all

disciplines (but likely primarily medical)

who are interested in changing the way
health care is done by applying the systems
thinking way of thinking. These would
probably be mostly pre-med students at
BYU or doctors.

Top Thing Learned

I learned how to make a lot of information
look like it is less information. I also learned
to organize information and ideas through
information hierarchy.

Description

Message

This is a project completed for my Visual

Communications class. The intent was to
learn basic HTML and CSS and to apply
visual communication concepts to them.
The webpage was to showcase an original
logo design and describe the process of
creating it.

The message I wished to communicate was Monochromatic Color Scheme

the process of my logo and how I got it to

the point of being a successful logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills)

I used Adobe Photoshop and Brackets (a
text editor) for this project. I took the basic
HTML and CSS that the Professor provided
and changed it to fit my logo. I imported
new fonts for use on the web page, and
made sure that the text was readable on the
web (15-16 pt standard). I used alignment
to give organization to the page, and applied
contrast in color to make it easily readable.
I was sure to pick a font for both the title
and the body that was easy to read and
appropriate. I also experimented a bit with
having the link change its CSS attributes
when the mouse is hovering or the link is
active.

Top Thing Learned
The thing that I learned most from this
activity was to follow directions exactly
when it comes to turning in assignments in
this class. Most of my other classes allow
some leniency when it comes to markup
languages. In this class, I had to make sure
that I did exactly what was asked of me.

I changed quite a variety of things, such

as the background color, border color,
characteristics of <a> tags, title tags, image,
text alignment and size, and added a lot of
CSS that wasnt there before.

Top Thing Learned

This is a project for my Visual

Communications class. I was instructed to
create a logo for a fictitious company and
design a business card and letterhead for it.

I learned that unity from the business card

to the letterhead is key. You have to make
sure it looks like the same company from
piece to piece.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills)

Color scheme and color names

I used Adobe Illustrator to create the

designs. I also used Adobe Photoshop to
create a digital mockup for the business
designs. I used alignment to create unity
throughout the piece. I also used strong
value contrast to create a dynamic element
in the piece. I made sure to use the same
colors, fonts and logo to have the business
cards correlate with the letterpress.

The color scheme I used analagous.

Message
The message of the logo is supposed to be
an innovative and on the edge web design
company.

LOGO | The Mod Script Pt. 2

Description

Audience

This is a logo project for my Visual

Communications class. We were instructed
to create a logo and display it in all color,
black and white, and white with a color
background.

Young, designer-type people interested in

typography and calligraphy.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills)

To complete this exercise, I used Adobe
Illustrator. I used alignment and value
contrast to make the designs dynamic and
unified. I started with making a sketch of
what I wanted the final design to look like.
Then, I digitized the design. I found fonts
that worked well with what I was trying to
accomplish. I redesigned the logo to fit with
different colors and specifications. I stuck
with the same color scheme throughout
the different logos to create a sense of
branding.

Message

Top Thing Learned

I learned that it is essential to have the text
legible in logo design. Strong text leads
to strong logos. In addition, I learned that
keeping a constant color scheme is key to
making the logos feel consistent with one
another.

Color Scheme and Color Names

I used a wide analogous color scheme for
this project.
Hot pink #ED1379
Navy blue #2C3B63
Dark grey #3B3B3B
Medium grey #7D7D7D

Light grey #DDDDD

The logos are meant to look modern. They
are modern in color, but somewhat classy in Title / Body Font Names & Categories
design and typography so the logo will last.

PHOTOGRAPHY | Project
Description

Purpose of the Assignment

This assignment was to go over the basic

rules of photography. We went over basic
compositional techniques. We explored
the rule of thirds and how it helps to create
a more dynamic piece. We also went over
lighting and Photoshop techniques. These
small details can really make or break a
photograph.

In this assignment, I practiced using the

camera to focus on different parts of the
image. I took pictures where the focus
was in the foreground as well as in the
background. In addition, I tried to control
lighting by experimenting with both indoor
and outdoor photographs. Also, I did some
with composition, designing with both the
rule of thirds and lead room.

Why I love it
I loved learning about photography because
it is a different type of design than I am
used to. Im used to being able to control
every aspect of a design. In a photograph,
however, you can only control a bit of what
the finished design would end up looking
like. Its a different kind of creative to try
to capture a composition in its purest form
without manipulating it to be exactly how
you want.

MODERN
CALLIGRAPHY
Understanding modern calligraphy
through a pioneers perspective
Diva Pyari of Linea Carta
March 2, 2016

We all want to understand how the great calligraphers begin.

We want to understand their tricks, their hardships, their
successes. All is revealed in an interview with Diva Pyari, a
professional modern-day calligrapher.

Introduction
Diva Pyari of Linea Carta was one of the first modern calligraphers that I knew of that sold a kit, which I of course promptly
purchased. I found it almost too gorgeous to use, the exemplar a
little work of art. It was one of the first times I was introduced to
tools that actually helped me gain some confidence in my burgeoning skill set and helped me to continue to pursue my love of
lettering, for that I am grateful. We are thrilled to be able to add
Divas interview to our long list of talented lettering artist interviews. Without further ado.

Question & Answer

As for developing my own calligraphy style, I was most inspired

by Lauren McIntosh from the charming little shop Tail of the Yak in
Berkeley.. About 6 years ago I walked in the shop and there were
all these lovely little signs in her graceful hand, Soap $1 it was
nothing like Id ever seen, full of personality. I went right up to the
shopkeeper and asked who did that and do they teach classes?!
Later that year I was at her home copying her delightful calligraphy, and after a few months of obsessive practice one of my
fellow students asked if she could hire me to do the calligraphy
for her wedding invitations and address her wedding envelopes.
That job led to others, and years later here I am!

What are some of your favorite supplies?

The Nikko G is my go-to nib, and I use Noodlers bulletproof
American eel Ink (waterproof and archival black) for many of
my professional projects. I also love McCaffereys Oak Gall ink,
though a more transparent ink. I use gouache quite a bit, Windsor & Newton designers gouache, to mix custom colors. These
days for projects I work mostly on Bond Layout Marker Paper its
smooth but picks up very subtle details. For brush lettering I like
the Utrecht sablette size 0, and my favorite pen right now is by
Muji (0.38mm hexagonal gel-ink needle tip).

Can you name some of your inspirations?

Nature, the sky, the sea, my cuuuute dogs, travel, color (neons to
pastels), friends & colleagues, packaging and design, light, a blank
canvas..

Can you go a little into your process of how you work on a

project?
When Im designing for my own brand my process is different every time sometimes its a quick and inspired work that flows, other
times its an idea that gets put aside for months as I work it out in
my off-time thoughts. And its everything in between.

was both easy to understand and

I portrayed information hierarchy
throughout the piece by making
clear distinctions between pieces of
information. The headers, subheads,

clearly marked.
Also, the typography is tailored for
the web. The text is large enough for
pixeled screens and is set in sans-serif
for increased readability.
