    Action for Healthy Kids and CSX Transportation came together to help a special needs student named Chris, to participate in physical activity. Chris was unable to swing during recess due to his limitation and the school needed special equipment such as an adapted swing for wheelchair bound students to use. The school was awarded an $1,000 grant by Action for healthy Kids, to purchase and install the new adapted swing. The adapted swing has brought Chris, his peers, and the staff so much happiness.

    HokeCountywhereshesawtherewasaneedtoimproveinclusionin
    herclassroom,particularlyamongonestudentnamedChris,thatis
    confinedtohiswheelchair.Shestatedthatshesimplywantedhimto
    experiencetothejoysofswinging.Chriswasunabletoswingduring
    recessduetohislimitationandtheschoolneedforspecialequipment
    suchasanadaptedswingforwheelchairboundstudentsashimselfto
    use.Chriswouldspendhisentirerecessinhiswheelchairwithoutany
    peerengagement.Itiscriticalthatchildrenwithdisabilitiesengagein
    regularandadequatephysicalactivity.Therefore,theadaptedswingis
    beneficialtooptimumhealthforstudentsthatlimitedphysically.
    Thankstoonepassionateteacher,SandyGroveElementarySchool
    createdawayforaspecialneedsstudentnamedChris,toparticipatein
    physicalactivity.ActionforHealthyKidsandCSXTransportationcame
    togetheronSeptember29,2015tohelpaspecialneedsstudentenjoythe
    joysofswinging.Theschoolwasawardedan$1,000grantbyActionfor
    HealthyKids,topurchaseanadaptedswingforChris.OnSeptember
    29,2015,twomenremovedtheexistingswingandinstalledthenew
    adaptedswing.WhileChrishadhisfirstexperienceontheadapted
    swing,theinstallationmenwereengagingandfriendlybycheeringhim
    onasheadjustedtoit.Theywentaboveandbeyondtomakehimfeel
    comfortableontheswing.
    TheadaptedswinghasbroughtChris,hispeers,andthestaffsomuch
    happiness.TherehasbeenapositivechangeinChrispostureandspirit

    sincebingingintheswing.Ithasalsohelpedinbuildingthebridgeto
    connectChriswithhisclassmatesandtheteacherassistants.Kellerman
    explains,thatChrissmomhasbeenabletopushhimintheswingfor
    thefirsttime,thus,shehasbeenempoweredtofightforherchildto
    experiencethesameopportunitiesashistypicallydevelopingpeers.
    TheinteractionsbetweenChrisandhispeers,thattookplaceoncethe
    adaptedswingwasinstalledhasincreasedtheengagementamongthe
    classmatesbothacademicallyandsocially.
