Maman Statue
The Maman Statue, outside of the National
Gallery Of Canada, in Ottawa, Canada was cast in
1999 as part of Louise Bourgeois innagural
commission of the Unilever series in 2000 first
unveiled in London at the Tate modern. Since then

there were 6 subsequent castings made of bronze

while the original was made of stainless steel. The
National Galler of Canada acquired the statue in
2005 for 3.2 million dollars.

The Statue stands at 30ft with the widest point

being 33ft. It has an egg cluster beneath its
abdomen containing 26 marble eggs
Figure 1- Egg sac beneath "Maman"

Louise was quoted saying this at the unveiling in

2000 The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was
my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a
weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry
restoration, and my mother was in charge of the
workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very
clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat
mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread
diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders
are helpful and protective, just like my mother.
