To Whom It May Concern:

It is my pleasure to write to you on behalf of Karim Sanane. I have known Karim for the past three and
a half years, as a student in my ninth, eleventh, and twelfth grade English classes. In this time, I have
come to know Karim as a hardworking, bright student, filled with potential and curiosity.

In todays society, a students mastery of established facts is not enough to prepare them for the world
of college and career. Rather, a student needs to develop those skills that will help them solve
complicated, real world issues. This will allow him to be well rounded and thrive in both college and
career. Having attended Sacramento New Technology High School, Karim has gained and refined these
skills. By attending a school that uses Project Based Learning as its primary method of teaching, Karim
is constantly asked to think of solutions to real world problems. He has been asked everything from
What responsibility do we have as citizens to act when issues are swept under the rug? to Should
Americas immigration policy be reformed? He is constantly presented such questions, and then asked
to research the issue, develop a solution, and report his results to peers, teachers, and community
members.

In all of his work in my class, Karim has shown that he has the ability to think deeply about complex
issues. Not every initial idea is a success, but Karim has shown over time an increasing ability to take
failures and setbacks and learn from them. He also is incredibly adept at seeking opportunities to
receive feedback and revise ideas. So, while his initial ideas might not be a success, by the time he is
ready to present his final ideas, they are solid, well-thought-out solutions. This growth mindset that
Karim employs when learning new topics not only makes him successful at Sacramento New Tech, but
will also help to make him be successful as a computer science major in college and later as an
information technologist. In fact, it is what helped him to perform well when interning at CalTrans, and
led him to currently be employed at the same company, all as a high school student.

Karim is a fantastic young man, and I believe wholeheartedly that he is deserving of the National Latino
Peace Officers Association scholarship. I recommend him without hesitation.
