Year 6 Physical Education

27/08/2014

Today, I taught my very first double lesson. This is a class that I have been observing
for the past months. Therefore I have already connected and relate to my students. This is one
of my favourite class. Therefore I followed in a similar manner as Mondays physical
education class. This is because I am teaching the same unit to two year 6 classes. Having
already observed Mr Loechels class on Monday, I felt a little more confident.1
Before officially starting the class, I reminded the students to be sun smart, even though it
was an overcast day, I always put the safety of the students first. Therefore, I sent the students
for sunscreen, hats and water.2
Therefore to start the class, I did a little introduction as the hook of the class. What I did was,
I mentioned the commonwealth game, and how both the women and men competition won
gold.3 After about 10 minutes of introducing the topic, I gathered the students around him and
explained and demonstrated the different passes (a push pass, a flick pass, and an air pass).
During this, I monitored closely with my surroundings, such as other students, and if I
see a student struggling, I would do provide one on one coaching and just reinforcing of that
technique. This is so that I can demonstrate the proper technique of that pass.
Therefore, once I have assessed what I needed, I gathered the students, and I
introduced the class number one rule, which is high stick. I told them that, at no point,
should the hockey stick be higher than your waist. Therefore I used a serious tone, and I
explained that this is our number one rule, always.4
After getting the students to do the activities, I gave them a quick drinks break. After
this, I asked the class, so what were the three passes that we did? And what is our number one

rule? I wanted to reinforce their learning. It is important to keep asking question to students
(this is something I have learned from the feedback of the last lesson). Even though I am
teaching, I am constantly thinking of the feedback of previous lessons and how to incorporate
improvement into my teaching.
After reinforcing the rules and passes, I got the students to play a mini game, again, I
told them that I am not looking for the goals and scoring, I said to the students that I am just
looking at you participating and enjoying and having a feel for hockey. However I mirrored
Mr Loechels lesson on Monday, but adding two rules in, high stick and no 2 versus 1. I gave
them minimal instructions because I wanted to see if they can pick some of the rules
themselves, in a way I wanted to test them. However, after 10 minutes of that, I started to
incorporate rules into the game, like out of bounds, fouls as the student play on.
After it was time to pack up, I got my students to pick up cones and put all the
equipment away back in their bags. Then I reviewed what was taught, and I asked one more
time, what is our number one rule?
Once I dismissed the class, I again looked for feedback, and Mr Loechel and I sat
down and talked about how I went. He said that I went well, and it is good that I already
know some of their names. There are areas that I need to improve on, such as clearer
instructions, and things that are not as noticeable, such as court positioning, using it and
positioning myself in a way where I can observe every student.
As I reflect on this lesson, I realised that, the biggest challenge I thought would be
Daniel (my special needs student). I thought that It would be really difficult in getting him to
participate, but I understand that because I took time to relate to him, asking him how his day
was, and talking about things that he likes, giving him high fives, things that really boost his
self-esteem. It is because of that, that I was able to get Daniel participating 85 percent of the
lesson. This is something Mr Loechel said is a massive improvement for Daniel from the
beginning of the year.5

Another area that we talked about is voice usage, I realised that I used my voice a lot
in that two lessons, that I also strained my voice. 6 This is something that I need to get used to,
as I keep forgetting that I had a whistle. As I reflect on this, I realised that this is what the
voice technique lesson was all about. Thank goodness for that lecture! What I love about
Mr Loechels feedback is that, he gives the feedback, but he allows me to learn from my own
understanding, in other words, he doesnt force it to me. As you can see in the feedback, at
the bottom he states, I used my voice a lot, so did you. Can you keep this all day, all week,
all year?. I think this is effective feedback, because I realised Mr Loechel wants me to think,
and learn what will be effective TO me.
