Ethiopia: Halleljuah
The Ethiopian Jewish community is unique in that it

developed many of its own customswhichissomething wecancelebrate.

Additionally, since it was starting to decline in the 1990s the Israeli
government rescued the population and brought it to Israel. Hallejuhah is
all about praising God with all of our energy. During this prayer, praise
GodbecauseofthemiracleofsavingthispreciousJewishpopulation.
The Ethipoian Jewish community, reffered to as Beta Israel, the houseof
Israel is thought to have started between the 1stand6thcentury. Thereis
not consensus about whether the Jewish community was led under a
unified government or whether there were many small Jewish
communities. Since the Beta Israel community existed in isolation from
other Jewishcommunitiesaroundtheworld,theydevelopedauniquesetof
religious practicesin some ways quite different from what is typically

considered "Jewish." For example, an order of Ethiopian Jewish monks

was founded in the 15th century to strengthen the community's religious
identityandresist Christianinfluence.Thismonasticmovementintroduced
an organized approach to religious practice, creating new religious
literature and prayers, and adopting laws of ritual purity. Like today in
Israel, Ethiopian Jews celebrated
Sigd
, a festival whichcommemoratesthe
giving of the Torah. On this holiday, community members would fast,
climb the highest mountain in the area, and listen to the kessim chant
passages oftheHebrewBible,particularlythe
BookofNehemiah(describe
what that means) In the afternoon they would descend, break their fast,
and rejoice in their renewed acceptance of the Torah. On a number of
occasionsthe BetaIsrael'smonasticclergytriedtoescapethemissionaries'
influence by leading their communities to the Promised Land. By and
large,these journeysweredisastrous.Oneparticularattemptin1862ended
in largescale starvationanddeath.Between1882 and 1892the regions of
Ethiopia where the Beta Israel lived suffered from afaminethatkilled an
estimated one third to one half of the Beta Israel. Jacques.Faitlovich, a
student of a french Jew who first reported about the Ethiopian Jewish
community securedtwolettersfromrabbisabroadacknowledgingtheBeta
Israel asfellowJews.Thefirstletter,writtenin1906,calledtheBetaIsrael
"our brethren, sons ofAbraham,Isaac,andJacob,whodwellinAbyssinia"
and "our flesh and blood." The letter, which promised to help the
community in its religious education, was signed by 44 world Jewish
leadersincluding thechief rabbisofLondonandViennaandtheSephardic
Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem.

Spanish colonization. In 1530, the first ship load of PortugueseSpanish
Jews enteredJamaica.They settledin SpanishTown(formerlySt.Jagode

arrived were Conversos, fleeing Europe to openly practice

were treated as second class citizens heavy taxes were imposed on them
and they were forced to work on Shabbat, however, Jews were still very
successful in the trade industry and plantation cultivation. In the 18th

history is that when the economy starts to do poorly, antisemetism rises.
Jamaica is no exception. Thishappenedinthe 19th century thereandthus

Kakungulu
. Originally, Kakungulu was converted to
ChristianitybyBritish
missionaries around1880.Whenthe Britishbegantaking awayhis territory
however, he turned away from them and strated a sect of religion that
combined both Christianity and Judaism. He gradually began to believe
more strongly in the Torah. Around 1920 he founded a Jewishcommunity
and severed all ties with the British. he arrival of a foreign Jew known as
"Yosef" in 1920 whose ancestralrootsarebelievedto havebeenEuropean,
contributed much towards the community's acquisition of knowledgeabout
the seasons in which
Jewish Festivals such as
Pesach
,
Shavuot
,
Rosh

Hashanah
,
Yom Kippur
,
Succot
, and others take place. A source in the
Abayudaya community confirms that the first Jew to visit the community
was Yosef, who stayed with and taught the community for about six
[5]
months,
andwould appeartohavefirstbroughttheJewish calendartothe
[3
Abayudaya community.
Furthermore, the laws concerning
Kashrut were

first introduced to the community by Yosef. The community continues to

practice kashrut today. Yosef's teachings influenced Semei Kakungulu to
establish a school that acted as a type of
Yeshiva
, with the purpose of
passingonandteachingtheskillsandknowledgefirstobtainedfromYosef.
After Kakungulu's death from
tetanus in 1928, Samson Mugombe Israeli,
one of his disciples, became the spiritual leader of the community. They
isolated themselves for selfprotection and survived persecution, including
that of
Idi Amin
, who outlawed Jewish rituals and destroyed
synagogues
.
During the persecutions of Idi Amin, some of the Abayudaya community
convertedtoeitherChristianityor
Islaminthefaceof
religiouspersecution
.
A core group of roughly 300 members remained, however, committed to
Judaism, worshipping secretly. Besides the five synagogues (Nabugoye,
Namanyonyi, Nasenyi, Namutumba and Putti), Jewish schools have been
establishedwithoutsidehelpfromindividualsandorganizations.

While persecution took place across Europeduring the

, inthe13

century, Poland served as a haven for European Jewry because of its

relative tolerance. During this period, Poland began its colonization
process. It suffered great losses from Mongol invasions in 1241 and
therefore encouraged Jewish immigrants to settle the towns and villages.
Immigrants flocked to Poland from BohemiaMoravia, Germany, Italy,
Spain and colonies in the Crimea. No central authority could stop the
immigration. Refugees from Germany brought with them German and
Hebrew dialects that eventually became Yiddish. In1264,Duke Boleslaw
issued the "Statute of Kalisz," guaranteeing protection of the Jews and
granting generous legal and professional rights, including the ability to
th
become moneylenders and businessman. In the 14
century, opposition
arose to the system in which Jews owned land that would be used as
collateral for loans. By the mid1300's, hatred of the Jews existed among
the nobility. According to the C

century, eighty percent of the worlds Jews lived in Poland. Were now
going to jump ahead into more modern times. In 1918, Poland became a
sovereign state. Following Polands rebirth, a reign of terror against the
Jews began. Jews were massacred in pogroms by Poles who associated

antisemetic incident beginning with the Holocaust. People will be able to go to one
station and learn about the incident and record the important information on a giant
sticky note. They will then share the info with the rest of the group. The sticky notes
will ask for the title of the incident, when it took place, who was involved, why the
Jews were being targeted, how gentiles reacted, the outcome, and how it personally
resonated with them. It is best if people go to a station where they dont know a lot

AntisemetisminAmericanUniversitiesandColleges

The present administration of President George W. Bush is probably the

most supportive of Israel the US ever had. It is easy to imagine the dire
consequences of the loss of this support to Israel and the Jewish People.
However, large segments of US population are hostile to Israel and by
extension to the Jews. These include Moslem groups that have been
growing more rapidly than the rest. The only group which, as such, is
really friendly to Israel are the fundamentalist Christians, whose motives
are moral and theological. The iimportant weight within the Republican
Party influences the foreign policy of this party. On the other hand, the
Democratic party is slowly being taken over by radicalsandThirdWorld
elements who are viscerally proArab and antiSemitic. Nowhere has this
dangerous constellation of forces been more evident than on university
campusesamongbothfaculty membersandstudents. Asimilarsituation
existed in Germany during the halcyon days of the liberal Weimar
Republic in the 1920's. Then, the Nazi Partyflourished ontheuniversity
campusesofGermany butdidpoorlyatthepolls. ThevirusofJewshatred
is spreading from an increasing number of American colleges and
universitiestotheelitesoftheUnitedStates.
At some point, we should be prepared for US foreign policy and societal
norms toward Jews to be affected by this. One can only hope that the
situation of the Jews in America will not deteriorate to the level now
prevailing in Europe. The past three years have beenparticularlydifficult
forJewishstudentson Americancampuses. Therehasbeenasharprisein
the number of antiIsrael and antiSemitic demonstrations, posters, flyers
and speeches from coast to coast. Numerous ugly incidents are being

reportedandsupportersof Israelfeelthegrowinghostilityaroundthem. A
disturbingphenomenonis the appearanceof"AntiZionistWeek"onmany
campuses with the support ofacademic administrations. Jonathan Berg, a
21yearold senior at th University of San Diego, complained that much
"very, very antiSemitic stuff is passed around," from faked Talmudic
quotations saying that Jewish males may violate any nonJewish females
overtheageofthreeto
quotations from T
he Protocols of Elders of Zion.
At the University of Chicago,
Jewish students formed a coalition which is holding the university
responsiblefortheatmosphereofintimidationandhatefacedbytheJewish
students. They noted that the increase inantiSemiticincidentskeptpace
withthe escalation of violence in the Middle East and related that an
obviouslyJewishstudentwaswalkingonthecampusone
eveningwhen acardroveupbeside himitsinmatesshouting"Deathtothe
Jews. Hitler should have finished youoff whenhe hadthechance." The
group wrote: "These incidents are symptomatic of an increasingly alarm
problem for Jewish students [here]. Jews are being mistreated and
intimidated on campus. In the University of Chicago, antiSemitism has
been made acceptable, even fashionable, by a long processs academi
delegitimizingof IsraelandJudaism. Outburstsagainstotherreligionsand
ethnicities, including Islam, are not considered acceptable and they occur
much more rarely. [Responsible for] this delegitimizing are professors,
students, administrators,anda hostofinstitutionalpractices."OnMay7th
2002, a major antiSemitic incident occurred at the State University of
CaliforniainSanFrancisco.Professor
Laurie Zoloth, Director ofits JewishStudiesprogram attendedthe Hillel's
Peace in the Middle East rally with several hundred students, faculty and
members of the Jewish community who heard speeches supporting Israel
and sang Hebrew songs. Arab supporters advanced on a group of 50
students who stayed behind to clean up. Professor Zolothdescribedwhat
ensued: "As thecounterdemonstratorspouredintotheplazascreamingat

noted that intheemail she circulatedthattheantiSemitic, antiIsraeland
