I am writing this letter on behalf of David Howard regarding his audition for the

Musical Theatre program at Sam Houston State University. While I cannot speak
about his skills and abilities in theatre, my experience with him is limited to film
work, I can speak about his talents and motivations as an artistic individual.
David has been one of my film students here at Sam and during my time with him I
have discovered he was quite different from the other students. He was not only
extremely motivated to become a storyteller he was also very talented and brought
unique artistic perspectives to his work. From my understanding he has a strong
contemporary art training background that has made him a well devolved creative
thinker. He was always looking for stories to tell and film while he was with me he
excelled in his class work but also created films outside of class that exceeded what
I have seen from many students in the past. From what I know of he has directed
two music videos with professional independent musicians, directed 2 short films
with friends, and was cinematographer on a film that was one the most beautiful
student films I have seen in my many years of teaching. He was on his way to a
successful career in the film industry, so needless to say I was a little confused
when he told me he wanted to work in the theatre. After speaking with him in my
office however I discovered that he was looking for something that could satisfy his
artistic needs that film could not fulfill but live theatre could. I have doubt that he
will succeeded in wherever he goes with his career, whatever training you throw at
him he will not only absorb but take it and push it beyond limits.
