Re-Imagining the Internet

1.

Vint Cerf has described the InterNet as a homogenous network that connects
heterogeneous computers. What did he mean by that?
Different devices connect via the use of protocols.
2. What is Metcalfes Law?
Value of telecommunications network is equal to the number of users
connected to the system, squared.
3. Where, geographically, are the majority of the Internet users located?
Asia
4. Concerning the Internet, with what are mobiles helping?
Global internet
5. In design terms, what differentiates the Internet from earlier networks such
as the telephone and Telegraph networks?
The latter were connected through wires; Internet can be connected to
wirelessly.
6. Was there a particular logic in Vint Cerfs choice of a 32-bit address space for
IP addresses?
No
7. How do digital signatures relate to closing an important vulnerability in the
DNS system?
Digital signatures add authentication, closing down the vulnerability of
impersonation.
8. What is a sensor network? Give an example.
Sensor networks gather information from various devices. Air pollution
monitoring, machine health monitoring, data logging.
9. Why is cloud collaboration important?
Currently due to the lack of a protocol, clouds are not able to
communication. Cloud collaboration will help inter-cloud
communication.
10.What is strong authentication? Why is the lack of this an issue?
The verification of the network component as safe and trustworthy.
Without strong authentication, there is higher risk of security breaches.
11.What does Cerf cite as a problem with the Internet and copyright?
Its easy to copy and distribute digital information. Copyright should
allow for recovery of intellectual property, not control of copies.
12.What does Cerf mean when he talks about rotten bits? Give an example.
Data decay; information becomes outdated and can be misinterpreted.
13.Briefly describe the InterPlanetary Internet. In your description, describe how
this solves the point to point InterPlanetary communications problem.
Computer networks in space. If we start developing technologies, lag
would be reduced when communicating in space.
14.. In an Internet context, what is common carriage? What implications does
this have for Interne billing?
15.
Rules are universal and apply to everyone. This could bring about a
fixed data rate.

16.What does Cerf mean when he says that in the future, the network will
disappear?
All devices will be network compatible, the term network will
disappear.
