Training
1st-5th grade

WEB ACTIVITY
Purpose:
Get to know each other.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

Purpose:
Let the students know what is expected
from them:
Tasks of mediators
Role of mediators
Responsibilities of mediators

Mediators
Role model for other students.
Help students learn how to talk about their
problems.
Confidentiality -things said in mediation are not
to be shared with others (their friends or even
other mediators).
Attend all mediation meetings.
Peer mediation is-kids helping kids!

Conflict
Purpose:
To get students recognize conflicts and
identify types of conflict that might mean
nothing to them, but to others is a big deal.
Brainstorm a list of conflicts that they see
happen between students in school.

STEPS OF MEDIATION
Purpose:
To help students know, understand and
practice each step that they must follow as
mediators.
Apple Example

STEP 1: Introductions
A.Shake hands with everyone either before
or while you are saying: Hi! We will be
your peer mediators today.
B. We understand that there is a conflict
here and you both want to solve it. Is
that true?

Step 2-Welcome
Say:
A.Mediators are listeners and helpers. We are
not here to decide who is right or wrong. We will
not take sides.
B.We are not here to solve the problem, but you
will find your own solutions to the conflict.
D. Everything said here will be kept in this room
unless one of these things is happening. Do you
agree to keep everything between us?
Someone is hurting you, you are hurting yourself,
you are hurting someone else

Step 3- Rules of mediation

Say: We must all follow the rules of
mediation or mediation will have to
end and we will let an adult like the
teacher or the principal deal with the
conflict.

STEP 4- Each side now tells

their side of the story
I Statement Worksheet
Say: Who would like to tell their story first?
If no one volunteers, the mediator will pick
who goes first.
* Listen to the different stories.

STEP 5- Finding Solutions

Say: What would be some possible
solutions to this conflict? have them
write on I Statement Worksheet
Do not give solutions.
If the students in conflict can not come up
with a solution, you should end mediation.

STEP 6- Agreeing on a
solution
Say: Which solution can you both agree on?
Peer Mediator writes this onto the Peace
Table Session Contract.

What is the Peace Table

It is a space in the classroom where students can
go to solve conflicts in a peaceful and healthy
way.
It is NOT a space for
students to calm down,
have a time-out, or take a
break
